I just had my growth scan and while baby is growing just fine (50th percentile for growth at an estimated 2 lbs, 12 ounces)l, the doctor did notice that the placenta is aging prematurely. 5 to 10 % of it is calcified.
Anyone else have this? Is it related to Pre-e at all? |

| Premature aging of the placenta can go hand in hand with pe. With all of my kids my placenta had prematurely aged. With my first, it did seem to be affecting the growth of the baby. My second and third babies did not seem to be affected by the prematurely aged placenta. Did he tell you what grade your placenta is? They are graded 1,2,3, with 1 being the best and 3 being the most aged. As long as the baby is growing well, I would not worry about it. |

Yes, she's growing fantastically well. 3 weeks ago, she was estimated to be 1 lb 14 ounces. Now, three weeks later, she is 2 lbs 12 ounces. He did not say what grade I was, although I did hear the tech say that she got a 2 to 3 (at the time I didn't know what she was talking about, but I suppose she meant grade 2 to 3).
The doctor did say that 50% of the placenta would have to be affected for it to affect the baby.
How quickly does it continue to age? Is there anything that can be done to slow the calcification? |

| My placenta aged quickly with my 3rd but I was informed that they really don't know what this means. There is a correlation between early delivery and aged placentas but that's in high risk cases since those are the only ones who have the extra ultrasounds. In pregnancies that don't have complications they have no idea how many of these are aged as well. So if your placenta is showing aging it just means they will watch you. I went over 1 month with an aged placenta and had a perfectly healthy, no NICU time baby with my 3rd. Good luck. |
