The Expert's Answers
The Preeclampsia Foundation is fortunate to have access to and the support of
numerous health professionals both nationally and internationally. Our members
forum includes a section called, Ask the Expert
where members of our medical board answer questions on preeclampsia and
other hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. While all of our experts are
specialists in the field of preeclampsia, each may offer different advice.
This site exists so you will have the most comprehensive information
available to discuss with your own health care professional.
Please note: It is
extremely important to remember that this service is not provided to replace
the care that you are receiving and is not intended as medical advice but
rather the expert opinion of one professional. You should never make medical
decisions based on the guidance of the Ask the Expert column without the
support and approval of your health care professional. When in doubt--contact your
doctor. It is important to be able to speak freely with your health care
provider.

Ask the Experienced
Many women find a great deal of helpful information through our Ask the Experienced thread
also in the Forum. This area does not
represent the collective medical opinion of our medical board and one should
remember that this information in particular is anecdotal and not from the
Preeclampsia Foundation nor represents a medical opinion. It does address specific experiences (one
woman may share what treatment her physician used) and it includes broader
issues--including making the decision to try
to have another child. This section
includes posts from women who know as much or more than some physicians to
those who do not understand the basics. Regardless of the level of feedback--it is nevertheless NOT medical
advice and women and their partners should be very clear on this distinction.

Legal Issues
It is not
uncommon for the Preeclampsia Foundation to be contacted from both attorneys
and parents who have had a loss about the possibility of legal action against
their physician. The Preeclampsia
Foundation does not participate in litigation in any way, either by funding
cases, or providing expert witnesses. Our mission is to work together with researchers and physicians to
ensure the best quality of care. We do
not encourage or discourage such actions. If you feel your case was mishandled, we encourage you to file a complaint
with your state's licensing board and, if appropriate, investigate litigation. Additionally, we do not defend poor quality
or negligent medical care nor provide financial support for such defenses. Doctors on our medical board have testified
for both the defense and prosecution in such cases. Some will also review medical histories to help you understand
more fully what happened. These
services are usually for a fee and would need to be arranged directly with the
doctors themselves. We will not forward
any emails. It is important to know
that there is no universally accepted standard of care and the diagnosis and
treatment of preeclampsia is very complex. We generally encourage families to consider using their grief and anger
to change the system and join our efforts.
