I didn't get pre-eclampsia, instead moved rapidly from eclampsia into full-blown HELLP that gave me a stroke, ruptured my liver, and put me in a three-week-long coma from which the doctors were not certain I'd emerge. I was blessed with world-class medical care, completely paid for by my Union-provided medical insurance. I also had amazing friends and family who helped care for our infant daughter, so that my husband could be with me every step of the way, advocating on my behalf. ...

I remember how excited we were when we first found out I was pregnant. It was November 8, 2010. I had taken a pregnancy test by myself because I wanted to surprise my husband with the news. After taking the test I was ecstatic and went to the store where I found a bib that said “Daddy’s hugs are the best.â€Â...

After the birth of my son in 2001, it was now 5 years having a Norplant and I felt that it was now was good time to try and have another baby so I had Norplant removed. I immediately conceived in 2006 and so I thought it would be a similar to my first pregnancy which was smooth with the usual morning sickness. I attended antenatal clinic at private hospital where they had a package which was cheaper, I thought than having a private doctor.
A...

I got pregnant when I was 19 years old. I had a perfect pregnancy, until one day i woke up and couldn't recognize myself. I went outside for fresh air and put my feet down and they wre so swollen my toes didn't touch the ground.
My next doctor's appointment was 3 weeks away. When I went in for my monthly checkup, they did all the usual tests and did not say a word, just looked at me as if they wanted to say they were sorry and that they knew what was laying ahead for me. When m...

Like many of those involved with the Preeclampsia Foundation, Kristen Simmons has a unique story of survival, but Simmons' case included a very unusual complication. In July 2009, Simmons developed severe preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome shortly before the birth of her daughter Sydney. Sydney was born not breathing, but was successfully resuscitated, while her mother bleed internally, going into multi-organ failure. Simmons ended up needing a liver transplant only days after giving birth and w...

My pregnancy was nearly perfect. I felt better than I had my entire adult life. I didn't have any morning sickness, I avoided many of the typical pregnancy complaints. I absolutely loved being pregnant. Then at 36 weeks I went to my OB told me I was measuring big and sent me for a follow up ultrasound at the hospital. I was 36 weeks 4 days. I arrived at the hospital nervous, but not too concerned after all I felt fine and baby seemed to be doing well. Thankfully my husband...

Written April 2002:
On March 23, 1998, the EMTs from the ambulance wheeled me into one of the labor & delivery rooms and were preparing to transfer me to the bed when the waiting perinatalogist on call snapped at them to leave me alone: "We don't have time for that!" The ultrasound machine was waiting and the doctor checked my pregnant belly, and then looked at my husband and me, "I'm sorry," he said. "It's too late."
I...

My second pregnancy was uncomfortable from the start, but by 16 weeks my OB had me monitoring my blood pressure and going to an internist for medication. Both she and the internist I saw for blood pressure medication told me that I had chronic high blood pressure that had only been detected because of the pregnancy and additional monitoring. However, I had never had high blood pressure at all prior to the pregnancy.
I also had not had the intense and days-long headaches I was ...

I lost my baby Gabriel on April 9th, 2011. I went to the hospital vomiting and with pain in my upper right abdomen, and my doctor told me it was trapped gas and sent me home. Three days later I was in so much pain I went back to the hospital, and my liver was failing, my platelet count was down to 7,000. I ended up being transferred to another hospital and they had to deliver my precious angel. I was only 22 weeks. My baby boy only weighed 7 oz. and 9 inches long. This...

This morning, I was walking my children down the driveway for their very last day of the school year. My son went to the mailbox and handed me a stack of envelopes. On the very top was the newsletter for the Preeclampsia foundation. I had wondered at first if it were only a coinincidence, perhaps this newsletter was sent to all women, or perhaps I was meant to receive it today. Because only moments before my son handed me the mail, I looked at my little girl, proud, that today would be her la...

I generally like telling horror stories, but this one is hard to tell. I always end up trying to reassure people that what happened at the end of my wife's second pregnancy is very rare, but then I have to admit that I have met many women who suffered from preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome. So it's not so uncommon. And worse, it seems inexplicable.
My wife was seven months pregnant with our second child and it was the week after we had thrown her a baby shower and a few days...

My boyfriend Ryan and I were already going though a hard time, with him losing his job and then trying to find a new place to live, when I found out I got pregnant on birth control. But none the less we started preparing for this new bundle that was coming..
At 5'6 and 115 pounds, my weight slowly i...

Well I'm one of the lucky ones. I was able to hold my 1 pound baby, with the life saving cords, and breathing machines attached to him. I was able to watch him grow and breath in life and turn out to be an amazing 8 year old boy with no medical problems... I was one of the lucky ones!! On May 25, 2003, we didn't feel very lucky. After spending 3 days in the hospital with severe preeclampsia, pain began to creep up my back and I began to throw up. Little did we know that af...

This is my fourth baby, so you would think I have this down by now. I have been having some odd symptoms that I am not sure what is the cause. Someone recommended that I look up pre-eclampsia.
What has been happening: A month ago (24 weeks pregnant) I was having cramping and pain in my belly. When I went to be checked out the doctor said I had white blood cells and protein in my urine and that I should take antibiotics because I had a UTI. Turns out that the test for an infection came...

It's been a little over 6 months since I had an emergency c-section to deliver my baby and halt my eclamptic seizures. I learnt I was pregnant back in April of 2010, when I was 32. My husband and I had pretty much decided we did not want to have a child, so the news was unexpected, but nevertheless welcome. My pregnancy started off with nausea, some actual vomiting, and a lot of gagging. Alas, it never went away. I was nauseated pretty much 24/7 and for all 34 weeks of my pregnancy. During th...

May 20, 2011 would have our Cooper’s First Birthday.  My pregnancy with his older brother Davis could not have been more perfect. No swelling at all, my BP actually decreased 10 points during pregnancy, went two days past my due date before I was induced because Davis was on the large side.  So naturally I was expecting the same with Cooper’s pregnancy two years later.  From the beginning, Cooper’s pregnancy was harder for me.  On April 30,...

My husband and I have been together for about 9 years. We started dating when he was 18 and I was 19. I was always skeptical about young couples since we both were at an age that we would be doing a lot of growing and changing so we never even mentioned marriage until we were together for several years. We finally got married 09/11/10, after being together for over 8 years. After we got married, since I was turning 28 just a few short months after the wedding, we agreed we wou...
