I went on a family reunion cruise when I was about 22 weeks pregnant. The night of the captain's dinner I had to carry my shoes to dinner because my feet were so swollen. As the cruise progressed so did the swelling. With the advice from all the women around me I went and saw the ship's doctor. My story happened almost 4 years ago, but seems like it just happened. I like many others had pre-eclampsia. I was a very healthy person with normal blood pressure. I also showed signs that my doctor had over looked, what she called weight gain wasnt it was in fact my body filling up with fluids. I also started getting the headaches which come from elevated blood pressure but they were tolerable so I never took it as a sign of any thing. I will never forget the day preeclampsia entered my life. My pregnancy was full of obstacles from the start. I bled for the first three months. I knew before I ever tried to get pregnant that I had Antiphospholipid Syndrome (APS). On Monday, April 29, 2002, I went to work as usual. I had my 30-week prenatal check-up at 11:30 that morning and when I left the office, I told my boss I'd be back in about an hour. I felt perfectly fine.

My son was born at 28 weeks gestation. I went to the dr for a routine check up and it was discovered that I have the symptoms of preeclampsia. I was instructed to go to the hospital immediately. My due date was 02/05/02. I had developed GD and had to go on insulin shots. They sat an induction date for 01/25/02 to reduce the risk of still born. I was thrilled to find out that I was pregnant and I had wanted this for so long. I had just broke my back 3 months earlier and was doing fine, but needed a happiness in my life. I have been a Labor and Delivery nurse for five years and never expected to experience anything like I did. I do feel in a way that even though it was an awful experience it was a blessing.
