My story begins on August 4, 1997. I was 32 weeks along with my first pregnancy. I woke up that morning with severe abdominal pain and I had chest pain. We called my doctor and I went over to their office right away. My blood pressure was skyrocketing and I was spilling protein in my urine. The doctor sent us to the hospital immediately! As soon as we got to the hospital, they started hooking me up to all of the monitors and my blood pressure was 188/118. They immediately started me on M...

I wasn't diagnosed with HELLP Syndrome until after I insisted that there was something wrong and lab work was done. (I had chest pain and did not feel good at all. I also had blood in my urine.) My counts were so low that I was called by my doctor directly and ordered to immediately go to the hospital.I had to be put under general anesthesia and was even thanked by my doctor for being so persistent or I/our son would have died! We had a doctor before that miss this and ...

My first pregnancy started out an uncomplicated one. No morning sickness, very little cravings and very little weight gain. This was up until my 3rd trimester - once I hit 30 weeks, it all changed. I started to have some problems with my blood pressure. It was getting way too high for this point in my pregnancy. It had been normal, in the 120's/130's over 70's/80's, and then in started raising to the high 140's/low 150's over high 80's/low 90's. My obstetrician of course caught it right away, an...

I am currently 25 years old. My story begins June of 2008 when my daughter was conceived. I am a paramedic so I was familiar with pregnancy things with seeing people and delivering babies. So when I found out I was pregnant I was so excited. I continued to work with some heavy lifting but I always tried to use my legs and arms. All the guys would give me a hard time and say I couldn't do it. I knew I could and I never felt like I was jeopardizing my pregnancy. As the months passed and my belly g...

I felt fine. I had a scheduled doctor's appointment in February 27, 2006, at 32 weeks. After checking my blood pressure twice, and asking if I was "okay", my doctor sent me straight to labor and delivery. I was terrified! My husband was deployed in Iraq, and all I could think about was him not being there to tell me it was going to be okay. I didn't realize that I would soon be giving birth to our first child, alone. I had no warning signs. My head didn't hurt, no blurry vision, no excessive wei...

When I was 16 weeks pregnant, I went in for my appointment and was told my blood pressure was slightly elevated, but we will just keep an eye on it. At my 20 week appointment, my BP was still elevated and my doctor decided to put me on labetalol as a precaution. On the labetalol my BP was finally starting to normalize. At around 28 weeks I started to retain water. I didn't think much of it; I thought it was normal to experience swelling. At 28 weeks I started to go in weekly for non stress test...

Hello! I am 35 years old and 14 weeks pregnant and showing some protein in my urine. I had preeclampsia with my first son and the doctor told me I had toxemia which I never understood for years. I was a week overdue when I went to the hospital feeling really horrible with a headache, bad pain in the upper abdomen, and vomiting. I decided to go to the hospital myself since I was only a 5 minute walk away and I didn't tell my family. When I got there I was admitted right away and was being monitor...

I am currently 13 + weeks pregnant and at my initial OB appointment my platelets were found to be low in the 120s. I was then referred to hematology that rechecked my platelets approx 1 week later and found them to be 110. They did not seem to be concerned until they got down into the 70s but wanted me to get my blood checked at each OB appointment. The next week at my OB appointment they were down to 90 and now I am having to go to the perinatal doctor. I am just starting to get a little w...

In March 2009 I found out that I was expecting our first child. We had been praying for and trying to conceive a child for almost 2 years at this point, so we were overjoyed and thankful to have received such a blessing! For the last couple of years I had not had a visible menstrual cycle. I was diagnosed w...

My daughter was born at 28 weeks. She weighed 2 lbs. 5 oz. I had never been so scared in all my life. They told me before I gave birth to her, she would not cry. She did however struggle to make a squeaky, almost kitten meow sound.
She was on a ventilator for only 2 hours and it was room temp air, not oxygen. To everyone's amazement, she was only in the hospital for about 30 days. She came home at 4 lbs. even.
She is now 11 years old. No learning...

I became pregnant very young at 18 years old. At around 5 months I was informed at a checkup that my baby was showing up a little smaller than she should've been on the utlrasound. The nurse told me that since I was small, it may just be genetic. But I was sent to a specialist anyway. The specialist informed me that I was going to develop preeclampsia and that my baby would most likely be delivered early, "But we're gonna try to keep her in there as long as we can" he said.Th...

I remember waking up a week before having my stroke with my whole face, legs and feet being completely swollen. The night before I had my stroke, I remember telling my husband that I think they would induce my labor. That following morning, I was so swollen that I could only take baths. While I was taking my bath, I remember having my stroke in the bath tub. The paramedics rushed me to the hospital and performed an emergency c-section. My daughter was born at 6 months. Now, my daughter is a year...

I never quite know where to start on a story involving as many details, as well as gray-areas, as my story does. So, I will begin with the fact that it was my first pregnancy (and only, so far) and I had began my sobriety at the first knowledge of conception. Therefore, my body was going through both hormonal changes as well as homeostasis adjustments, which made it that much more stressful physically and mentally. I went from 114lbs at conception to 189lbs at the time o...

My beautiful son Alfie-James Paris was born sleeping due to severe preeclampsia on December 22nd 2009 at 8.35 a.m.I went to the hospital in the early hours Tuesday morning December 22, 2009 as I was in a lot of pain. I was actually in labor. The nurses tried to find Alfie-James's heartbeat but they couldn't find it. That's when mine and my boyfriends' world's fell apart. They told us he may have died. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. How could my perfect son be dead? They then got the...

I had preeclampsia when I had my son 10 years ago. Since then, I have had trouble recognizing voices on the telephone, even those of people very close to me. I recently learned that this condition is called phonagnosia. It usually results from brain injury or stroke. There is a case documented of someone who had it from birth. Since I didn't, I wondered if it resulted from my preeclampsia? Has any one else had this experience? Paula Barvin...

Hi my name is Maribel,In May 2006 I found out that I was pregnant. This was going to be my third baby. On September 19 I noticed that I was very swollen and I went to see my doctor. When the doctor was checking to see if the baby was okay, she could not hear the baby's heart beating so the doctor sent me to the ER asap. When I arrived @ the ER my blood pressure was 190. It was very high so they immediately decided to give me an ultrasound to see if the baby was okay. ( I was only 17 w...

When I found out that I was pregnant May 2001 my husband and I were so excited!! This feeling quickly turned into one of anxiety when my bloodwork came back with all my"numbers" low and the call from the doctor saying that I was probably going to have a miscarriage. We were so upset, this was our first pregnancy and we wanted this so much. Fortunately for us things turned around and my numbers went up and we saw the heartbeat. My pregnancy was mostly typical after that.&n...
