I was doing great with my pregnancy. I was eating good and on a very strict diet, no caffiene, choclate, or fatty foods. I exercised on a regular basis. After about 30 weeks all I could do was swim because the baby was on my nerve. I was one day shy from being 39 weeks pregnant and I had an appointment to go to the doctors for my weekly check up. I was feeling miserable. I did not no exactly what was wrong, but I knew something was not right. I start with my urinalysis.....there was protien found. I had gained 10lbs from the previous week, My blood pressure was 156/92. My norm is 115/65. I had 3+ edema(I had this edema for about 6 weeks). Red flags were all over me. The doctor came into the exam room and immediatly said that she was sending me to the hospital. She called the hospital and decided to have me go first thing in the morning. She was going to put me on pitocin and take it from there. I arrived at the hospital at 6:00a.m. Friday morning. The plan was to be aggressive with the pitocin so I could deliver this baby. I was on the pitocin, the epidurals (3) did not work, I would not dialate past 7cm and my blood pressure was still holding high. The doctor finally came to see me at 7:30p.m. that evening and said we are going to give you one more hour and if you still have not made any progess, we are taking you to the OR. I did not understand what was going on at the time. I just thought she wanted me to deliver because I was telling her how awful I was feeling the day before. At 8:15p.m. I finally said lets just do it. 8:50p.m. the baby was born. I did not see me baby until the next day. I was in the recovery until 3:00a.m. My vision was blurred, I had a terrible headache, my blood pressure was still high. Saturday morning my doctor came to see me. I could tell that she was worried so I asked her what was wrong. She said that I had a serious preeclampsia and that if my body did not regulate, they were going to pump me with Mg. Fortunally they did not do that. I began to have an increase of urine, my blood pressure was holding steady, but not coming down. My headache was not as bad and I was feeling a little better. I was in my first semester of nursing school at the time I delivered. I am currently in nursing school and we are studying ob. Well now that I understand what everything meant and what was going on with my body it absolutely scares me. I now realize that I was on my death bed and I have no clue how I made it out of that hospital alive. I don't understand why my doctor pumped me with pitocin and allowed me to progressively get worse throughout the day when all the signs and symptons of preeclampsia were there. A week after leaving the hospital, my incision became infected. I stood up from the kitchen table and smelled this awful odor and I felt me socks wet. My incision had opened and pus came pouring out. After calling the doctor twice, he finally decided to meet me at the ER. It took 7 weeks for this incision to heal. I had a nurse come to my home in the morning and clean the incision and repack it and then my husband would do it in the afternoon. I really wanted to have more than 1 child, but after this experience, I don't know that I would want to even risk anything happening. I guess after all I am fortunate because I am still here to talk about it, but I did have a hard time bonding with my child. His Dad took care of him for weeks all by himself. I felt like he did not need me. Things are much better now. I have a healthy 5 month old son and would not trade that for anything in the world. |
