In November 2008 my daughter in her 24th week of pregnancy at age 21 had facial swelling, trouble with her vision and complained of a headache ( all of this came on in just one day ). I am a cardiac ICU nurse and remembered from nursing school that these symptoms were not a good thing in pregnancy. I called the OB doc and was told it was probably just a headache and to take Tylenol. After day two of this I brought a BP cuff home from work and checked her BP myself at home and it was 190/102. I called the OB doc again and was again told it was probably not anything to worry about and to call the doc the next day for an appointment for her. I told them we were going to the ER and thank God we did. This was a Thursday afternoon. My daughter's protein in her urine was very elevated and she was admitted with a diagnosis of severe preeclampsia. By that night her kidneys were starting to shut down and her platelets and RBC's dropping. By Friday morning my daughter was in HELLP syndrome ( with kidney failure ) and we were told the baby had to be delivered immediately to save both my daughter and the baby. Samara Nicole was 1lb / 6oz and spent 3 months in the NICU's between York and Hershey, Pa. She came home on Feb 7, 2009 weighing 5lb and has had no residual effects up to this point ( she is 19 months old) besides being small and a little delayed with walking and stuff. She is walking all over now and is healthy. Be aware of what is going on with your bodies during pregnancy. My daughter did not feel sick besides the headache which she blew off as just that. Her BP was fine up to the 24 weeks of pregnancy. It crept up quick and progressed quickly. Be an advocate for yourself and loved ones. Doctors are just human and do make mistakes. My daughter and myself would like to share and get involved with preeclampsia events, etc. My daughter is a single mom and dad was not and has not been involved from the gate so I have been her support.
