I was very blessed to have wonderful doctors throughout my pregnancy. Everything seemed fine...morning sickness, a little swelling, but nothing out of the ordinary. I did call the doctor's office one morning and got a doctor that was not mine...my lips were swollen...he said not to worry, so I didn't.
A few weeks later, I went in for one of my first "every week" appointments...I guess I was about week 34 or 35...my last appointment had been 2 weeks earlier. I felt really horrible, and did not want to eat because I felt so sick. I even had taken to sleeping sitting up....I told my husband I felt like I was drowning if I was lying down (he told me I was overreacting...he's now my ex-husband).
When I went in with the nurse, she weighed me and told me I had gained 11 pounds...I told her that was not possible, I had not been eating much, at all! She began asking me if I knew how often I was urinating (I was REALLY swollen looking at this time), and began taking my blood pressure. It was so elevated they would not let me get up! They wheeled me over to the hospital and explained that I had preeclampsia and hooked me up to meds. After a day, they did more tests and told me my blood platelets were low, urine output was low, and there was too much protein in my urine (HELLP). I was also having trouble keeping my eyes from crossing. At one point, my pressure went as high as 200/120....truthfully....I did not think your pressure could go that high!
They tried to induce, but it was too early, so I had a C-section. My beautiful son, Tyler, was born at 7 pounds 6 ounces! And his lungs were working well! However, the doctors went into a little bit of a panic because my placenta was rupturing. They controlled everything quickly, and I was sent home a few days later.
I am forever indebted to those 2 wonderful doctors that saved both my son and me....I had no idea how serious the situation was until I came home and began researching. I could have very well gone into seizures and died, but thanks to the quick work of the nurses and doctors, everything turned out fine.
I have no lasting effects, which surprised the doctors, considering how quickly it progressed...and my son is a happy, bright, and very healthy 12 year old!
