A happy ending!

Posted On Thursday, May 26, 2011  by erica

Well I'm one of the lucky ones.  I was able to hold my 1 pound baby, with the life saving cords, and breathing machines attached to him.  I was able to watch him grow and breath in life and turn out to be an amazing 8 year old boy with no medical problems... I was one of the lucky ones!!  On May 25, 2003, we didn't feel very lucky.  After spending 3 days in the hospital with severe preeclampsia, pain began to creep up my back and I began to throw up.  Little did we know that after several hours of these symptoms, I would be screaming "take the baby!"  The pain became so unbearable and I couldn't breathe, I just needed relief.  With a blur or doctors and nurses surrounding me, rushing me to the OR, after what felt like a few minutes, a faint little cry came out, and I saw my little peanut.  Caleb John was born at 27 weeks gestation, weighing in at only 1pound 13 ounces sacrificed his life to save mine!  I had HELLP syndrome, and the only way to save my life, was to possibly sacrifice his!  What an unbearable decision, one that I would weigh over in my mind, over and over again!  I am happy to say that he just celebrated his 8th birthday and he is my hero!!  My worse day, turned out to be one of the luckiest happy endings I will ever experience in my life!!

What a beautiful story and a happy ending. Mine was much like yours also, but my doctors made me wait 2 weeks in that kind of pain to see if she would grow.  It ended up, that they finally did an emergency C section and she was a tiny 30 weeker at just 2 lb 7 oz and was in the NICU 130 days.  My placenta was later examined and found to be old and dried up.  How could it have possibly nourished my baby? Most likely she stopped growing when I was admitted.
