my story started at 28 weeks at a routine scan. My baby was found to wiegh approx 2lb 14 oz. My midwife thought it was a litle small and recommended me to come for another scan at 32 weeks (4 weeks time).

It was a hot July and my whole body was swelling. This normally happened to me every summer anyway and I thought nothing of it. I went for my scan when I was 32 weeks pregnant and my little girl was still exactly the same wieght.

As this was my second child - the first being a normal healthy boy - nobody was particuarly worried until another midwife noticed that my babys heartbeat was a little slow, so they asked me to come in and stay the night in hospital for routine monitoring.

We had been out to buy some newborn size nappies the very same day, little did I know that my baby would not be wearing them for another 6 months.

During the night, I was fine until about 3am. I woke up for the toilet and was asked to do a urine sample as I had forgotten to provide one earlier. The sample showed 2+ protein. I had to do another one an hour later and this one was 4+. Then all hell broke loose.

My blood pressure was taken and was 230 / 150, they didnt believe the reading and it was taken again and again with 3 different peices of equipment.

Then the pain started, a slow growing pain right in the middle of my ribs and slightly on my right side. It felt like I had swallowed a golf ball and it wouldnt go down...My head started to feel very heavy like it was too heavy for my body, my fingers, feet, ankles and face were swollen like nothing I have ever experienced.

I was given a tablet to keep under the tongue which took the pain away for about a quarter of an hour, then it started again. My blood pressure was taken every 5 minutes and it was not coming down.

Finally the doctors decided enough was enough and I found myself making the phone call to the partner to come in because our baby was about to be born. She was born by emergency c section exactly 4 hours and 5 minutes after the onset of my symptoms. She was still 2lb 14oz and very poorly.

It amazed me to think how I had been looked after by someone up above because what started out as a routine monitor overnight turned into the birthday of my Abigail. If I had been at home, I would dread to think what would of happened. It would of been all to easy for the doctors on call to say "come and see me in the morning, you probably have indigestion or something". I was very lucky that I was in hospital that night otherwise I dont think we would of made it.

She spent 3 months in hospital which was very hard with my 2 year old son at home too, there is a light at the end of the tunnel however my little Abigail started her first year at mainstream school last week !!!!!!!!

Dont give up hope.
