About a month ago I began to have major swelling in my ankles and legs, I thought nothing of it. When I went to my mothers house about three weeks ago she told me that I may have preeclampsia, I went online that day and found a website on pregnancies and they said that swelling in ankles was normal in third trimesters, it was just water retention. I thought I had found the answer to my problem, I was wrong very wrong. Before I tell you the rest of my story let me tell you about my pregnancy. I found out I was pregnant in April and from then on I was almost always sick, I had headaches and I was vomiting many times a day, when I went to see my health care professional he told me that it was normal for some pregnant mothers to be sick for most or their entire pregnancy. So when the swelling started I thought nothing of it, this was also my first pregnancy. On Sunday September 5th I woke up and I was bleeding, I immediately woke up my boyfriend Jeff and told him I was bleeding and something was wrong and I needed to go to the hospital. When we got to the hospital they had me change into a gown and they took my blood pressure, and my doctor admitted me, I had preeclampsia. I felt the usual nausea and headache and I just wanted to go home, On Tuesday morning I remember the OB doctor came in and told me that they wanted me to stay in the hospital until I had my son. They were trying to buy time to keep him in the womb. They thought if even a few weeks would be better than now. That evening I started throwing up and I had a severe headache, they gave me a shot, which put me to sleep for the headache. Around 2 am my boyfriend was sleeping on the cot in my room and woke up to me having a seizure. My son was born at 2:37 am to end the preeclampsia. When I was in ICU and one of the nurses' told my mother and boyfriend that I might not make it. My boyfriend Jeff was in disbelief this was not the way we had envisioned my pregnancy I was supposed to go into labor in the middle of the night and he was supposed to drive me to the hospital and feed me ice chips not seeing his girlfriend being sent to ICU and seeing his son who weighed only 1lb. 15oz. being rushed to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The next morning I woke up in intensive care and I had no idea what had happened, one of the nurses' had to tell me that I had a seizure and that I was now a mom of a little boy in the NICU. From then on I was ok my blood pressure lowered slowly and I was released the following Monday. I am thankful for so many people; my doctor who sat at the desk all night the night my son was born waiting for any complications to arise, my boyfriend Jeff for being there and just holding me while I was having my seizure and until they took me into the delivery room, all of the NICU nurses' who continue to watch my son Sam and treat him, and for my mother without her and Jeff I would have nothing.
