This story is dedicated to my mother, Pauline who guided me through what i thought was the worst time of my life. Up until the age of 22 I classed myself as a fit and healthy female, ideal weight for my height, never been ill apart from the odd cold and never showed any signs of being unwell. I suffered period pains like anyone else although the pain would started up to a week before my period, it gradually got worse each time and in 1999 a Laparoscopy revealed I had Polycystic ovarian Syndrome, Endometreosis and a fibroid,I also had a protein c deficiency which meant my blood clots easier than most. To say I was shocked would be an understatement, I remembered thinking i'm not old enough. At least now I had an explanation for why I had not ever got pregnant and an answer for the pain. My life continued and in October 2001 I was delighted to say i was pregnant( be it with a little help from the Assisited conception unit). My pregnancy progressed well, I returned to work, ate healthily, my mom made sure of that, appart from feeling realy tired in the first three months everything was going well. My mom would go round to my house while I was at work, she would look after my dog and clean the house, so that I could take things easier, even though I felt great apart from an odd nagging feeling. At my ante-natel I asked if it was right that the baby felt so low, I was told it would be fine and the baby would move up in time. At my 20 wk scan, myself my mom ,my partner and a friend eagerly scanned the screen to try and find out the sex. We couldnt tell what the sex was, although mom was convinced it was a boy as it scratched its bum and put its thumb up. All the vital organs were fine, the growth was slightly under but i was told it was nothing to worry about, being my first pregnancy I had every faith in the people that were looking after me. I had gained two and a half stone by about 23 wks but was quite small on my front. There were people at work who didnt know i was pregnant. At around this time I was feeling more tired, I was finding simple things quite hard, writing caused me pain in my wrist and mom noticed my ankles were looking quite large. I had a chest infection so decided to work indoors. It was so hot in the office I was having problems with my eyes, i could see spots, by this time I could feel the insides of my legs rubbing together. My mom and partner insisted I phoned the midwife, I phoned but felt I was wasting her time, my ante-natel was five days away and i was told everything would be checked then. As i sat with the midwife she briefly checked my legs whilst telling me if every pregnant woman was sent to hospital the whole population would be in there. She checked my urine which showed I had +++ protein she then continued to say that she should have done my bp first as it would be higher now she told me about the +++ protein, as i had left my notes at home she was undecided as to whether to send me to the hospital. Reluctantly I felt, she called the hospital, explained the situation and asked If I should go in. Petrified but feeling it is obviously the best place to be , off to the day assesment unit I went. My bp was checked along with my reflexes, blood was taken and I was sent home with a 24hour urine collection pot, I was asked to return on Thursday it was now Tuesday. At home i was being spoilt by my partner and Mom, I opted for an early night , I had tea in bed and snuggled up with my hot water bottle for a good nights sleep. I woke for the toilet about 1am, as I put my foot on the floor a sharp pain shot through my right side, I hobbled to the toilet and returned to bed. At |
