I was diagnosed with pre-eclampsia in my 8th month of pregnancy, in November of 1974. First they tried bedrest with 5 mg. of phenobarbitol daily; then 10 mg. Finally I was admitted to the hospital on December 11, where I was treated with more phenobarb, morphine and magnesium sulfate. My BP was checked every 15 minutes; and when it would rise above a certain reading, I was given IV pushes of mag sulfate. My son was due December 25, but was deemed a good weight for a Pitocin-induced delivery on December 15.

By the time I delivered, I hadn't eaten solid food in about a week; so, I'm not sure if it was partially due to that or because my BP got higher than it's supposed to be able to get, without causing a stroke (or so they told me), but I had a near-death experience on the delivery table. My heart stopped in mid-push; they delivered my son via forceps and then I "came back" spontaneously!

I'm sure the fact that my doctor was very efficient, and the fact that I lived in a town with a university hospital (Loyola University Medical Center, in Maywood, Illinois) both contributed to the fact that I survived...I was deemed "very severe pre-eclamptic" and the more research I do, the more I realize how few hospitals are equipped for this kind of thing!

My son will be 28 this year, and he's given me two beautiful grandsons recently...

To anyone who has lost someone to pre-eclampsia, my heartfelt sorrow for you... And to anyone who has lost a child because of this...doubly moreso... Perhaps this information that's just been finally "proven," that mag sulfate IS highly effective for treating this disease, will save many more souls...

My love to everyone!

Sincerely,

Susan Sanford
