I wake up 35 weeks into my pregnancy with a very sharp pain in my upper chest on the right hand side. It is late Sunday night and by Monday morning - I feel no better, so I call in sick to work and then call my OB. In my small city, our OB's do not work on Monday's - there was one on call - however I don't really think I am an emergency situation. I really just think I have bbad heartburn.
I decide to call my GP. He sees me right away and suspects that it is my gallbladder, so he sends me for an Ultrasound.
Tuesday, I feel no better so I call in sick to work again. My GP calls late in the day to tell me the Ultrasound looks good. He suggests I quit work. He also mentions that if I'm not feeling any better by the end of the week to call the OB or go to emerg.
Early Friday morning I wake up, get out of bed because I am uncomfortable. I am now experiencing shoulder pain AND chest pain. I think nothing of it and rub some A535 into my shoulder and return to bed. The smell wakes my husband up. He is concerned that I am having chest and shoulder pain. He thinks heart attack. He wants me to go to emerg. 2 hours later, I agree reluctantly. It is now 3:30 am.
The Dr is emerg is awesome. My husband knows him and he tells my husband that he won't let us leave until he finds out what is wrong. I have a ECG and they take oodles of blood from everwhere.
7:30am, they decide to hook me up to a fetal monitor, so a nurse from the maternity ward comes down. I am contracting (Braxton Hicks) she thinks I won't make it until my due date. As of today I am 36 weeks pregnant.
To make a long story short at this point, I had tested positive for a clot on my lung. The Dr of internal medicine is on his way in, and I am to be admitted. They decide at this point to seek on OB's help.
Outside my room, the OB, Dr of internal med, the emerg DR and maternity nurse meet. They decide to check my platet level. 20 minutes later it is discoved - I have HELLP. They tell me the baby will be delived today - this afternoon. My platet level was 35. 1/2 and hour later, I am on the Maternity floor. They decide to check my platet level again - it is now at 24. It is dropping rapidly. All hell breaks loose.
20 minutes later, they hand my husband our 6 lb, 6 oz beautiful healthy baby boy. He is born emerg C section.
It takes me 3 days before I feel a little better. I did not want a transfusion - but would NOT have declined one.
I am one of the lucky ones. Ty is healthy - although we have had our share of hurdles, and I am alive.
