My orginal due date for my first child was Dec 12, 2000. It was late Sunday evening, October 22, that I first noticed that my baby was not moving. I told my husband that if I did not feel him move before the morning I would like for him to take me to the OB's office before we went to work. Monday morning arrived with still no movement. We went into my OB's office and were immediatly sent across the street to the hospital before we even saw the doctor. When I arrived in them Maternity Ward they hooked me up to a fetal moniter and left the room. About 5 minutes later the room was flooded with all types of doctors and nurses. I can't really remember what happened here. There was too much going on and no one seemed to be telling us anything. I overheard the words C-Section somewhere in the doctor's conversation to the nurse and began to panic. They had stripped my cloths off of me, placed me in a hospital gown, inserted a cathidar, started a magneisum drip along with dumping a ton of IV fluids into me. I remember telling the nurse sitting beside me that I was freezing. By the time she returned with the warmed blankets the Magneisum had taken effect and I felt like my skin was on fire. The doctor gave me my first of two shots of steriods to help mature the baby's lungs. It was sometime shortly after this that they advised me they were going to transport me to a different hospital that was more advanced in treating premature babies because I was not going home until I had this baby. I don't remember much of the ambulance ride except that they would not let my husband ride with me. So I asked him to go pick my Mother up and bring her with him to the hospital. Once I arrived they took me directly to the maturnity ward and hooked me up to a bunch of moniters and I stayed that way for 3 days. With the constant magnesium drip and wasn't allow to get out of bed at all. The Doctor did an ultrasound the third day and said that the baby looked good and the next afternoon we would stop the Magnesium and see what happened. Up to this point no one had mentioned what was causing my problems. The next afternoon they turned the Magnesium off and I was allowed a liquid meal and we waited. My blood pressure remained slightly high but not bad. I was feeling really horrible and advised the nurses that I was having trouble breathing. They simply told me that was a side effect of the Magnesium. However, that afternoon I was sent to X-Ray and was advised that I had Phenmonia. I was allowed to have demoral for the pain so I could sleep. Sometime around Midnight the evening my contractions returned. I still could not feel them but they were showing up on the moniter. The nurses were very surprised that I wasn't feeling anything becuase they seem strong on the moniter. At about 3 AM I remember telling my husband to go get the nurse because I thought my cathider had come out and I had wet my bed. When the nurse arrived she called for the Doctor because my water had broke. He informed me that he was going to let me go on into labor because this was nature's way of telling us that the baby was better off outside of my body. So we contacted our families with the news. It was 7AM when the Doctor came in to tell me that I was going to have to have a C-Section because the baby's heart rate was dropping drasticly everytime I had a contraction. I was 33 1/2 weeks pregnate at this time. So, at 9AM I was sent into the OR and my beautiful baby boy was born at 9:27AM. Weighing only 3lbs and 9ozs and 17 3/4 inches. His Apgar scores at birth were 7 and 9. He was sent to NICU and I wasn't allowed to see him until very late that evening becuase my blood pressure shot up to 190/110 as soon as I was out of surgery and they could not get my kidney's to operate properly. I was still not aware at this point what was wrong with me. I spent 9 Days total in the hospital and my baby, Zachary, was there for 12. It was not until the day before I was discharged that I found out that I had Preeclampsia. Even then I did not know how bad this could be. But after all that I have read I have found that both myself and my baby were very lucky. I never had much swelling or high blood pressure. My son is now a very happy and healthy 21 Month old. He had not complications due to his premature delevery. I am now 10 weeks pregnat with my second and last baby. We are very scared about this but will pray that this time we have an uneventful pregnancy. |
