I love the parent panel forums they have at our Children's Hospital... It really means alot when a parent is asked to come back to speak to the resident on how they can improve on the family centered care. Basically, it means the parents (when there) do all the diaper changes, temps, feeds (even if they have feeding tubes - get the BM or Formula warm and ready) baths, and anything else their child needs. I have been on many of the parents panels one even while we were there about how much should a family do or training the parents to do the simple things. It really makes the parents a part of the medical team when they can do so many things for their own child.

One of the nurses had my husband so trained that he would get everything done (temp, feed ready, diaper changed and weighed) and always joked how he was going to go to nursing school because he was trainned to do the job! (of course, he was kidding!!!)

What a wonderful opportunity. The impact of Katlyne's life continues to resonate. Let us know how it goes.

T,
What an honor! I'm jealous!
I hate to think how ignorant I was to think that that there was no way anyone there (NICU) that knew what it felt like other than the other parents there with me.
Though I was greatful for how nice we were treated by our main nurse, she treated us like it was her first day on the job, and she couldn't have explain everything to us more. While some others treated us like they were just there to do their job and earn a paycheck.
I'm thrilled to hear that you and your DH have been chosen to spead some light on this and give those young doc's some passion for their purpose.
So what are they serving for lunch? [;)]
Kidding, it's almost dinner time and I'm starving [:)]

Good Luck T, I do some public speaking for my job, but have never had to do that sort of emotional, personal talk, that takes a certain kind of brave! Those Dr.'s are very lucky to have you speak to them and share your personal lives with them. I know you will do a super job.[:)]

T,

You are such a strong person. The compassion displayed by our NICU team was just wonderful and it was so helpful to us... I am so thankful that you will be helping other doctors to help us parents...

What an awesome thing to be doing! I really admire you as well for doing this as it has to be hard, but it is necessary! Like you said, even if one doctor changes thought processes, or whatever, when talking to parents, it is so worth it! Let us know how things went!![:D]

Oh, T! As I read your post I started to cry..
I'm so glad you and your DH are doing this!
I admire how strong you are. I still can't make
it through doctor's appointments without crying,
when they ask me for my story.
I would do the same if I had the opportunity,
even if I had to muster that last little bit
of strength and courage from within me!!
You will make a world of difference to so many
parents! Wonderful! Let us know how it goes!

That is so great that you and Ben are doing that T! Bedside manner and empathy for the parents is almost equal to diagnostic ability and medical treatment. I hope that they all soak in what you have to say and remember it when they're dealing with scared and sad parents.
