Montana has the highest rate of whooping cough in the United States, nearly 12 times the national average, and 2.5 times higher than the second highest state. In the first nine months of 2005, there were 507 proven cases of pertussis in Montana, and in the past two years, two otherwise healthy young children have died from pertussis
