missing fingers

I'm so sad today. My friend who lives in Milwaukee went in for an induction yesterday (38 weeks) due to PIH (no pre-e), because her pressures were increasing. We didn't hear anything until this evening. She ended up having an emergency c-section because baby went breach...during labor apparently. Baby was born missing the middle and ring fingers on one hand. The thumb pinky and index finger are there, but are small and mishapen, I think. The parents are having a really tough time.

In my ultrasounds the techs looked for and counted all of Avery's fingers and toes. I just can't imagine why they didn't notice this...it would have at least been less of a shock to the parents.

Anyone have any experience with this sort of deformity? WOuld hypertension have anything to do with it? The mother was in excellent shape before pregnancy and ran 5 miles 4 days a week. She never had a problem with BP until she got pregnant. She was on meds the entire pregnancy.

I'm so bummed. We are going to visit them on Saturday.
