Extremely so, I found more information about its rise etc in the most recent baby talk magazine (September 2005) under the are vaccines safe article they have included information about pertussis whooping cough heres some of what they said

Despite our relatively high vaccination rates in the U.S., many American communities still have outbreaks of diseases like measles and pertussis, a respiratory illness characterized by spasms of coughing that can last for weeks or even months. In 2003, 13 children died of the infection.

Unvaccinated children can also spread infection to vulnerable family members. "Those children are more likely to give a disease to those who can't fight it off, such as a six-month-old or a grandparent living at home," says Dr. Saari. The incidence of whooping cough has been increasing since 1980, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently recommended a pertussis booster shot for 11-year-olds because the risk of passing the disease to a vulnerable relative is so high.Case in point: Last year in Wisconsin 300 children under age 1 came down with whooping cough, 177 of them less than 6 months old. Of these, half were hospitalized and three died. Yet, says Dr. Saari, "for a child to die from whooping cough in this day and age is criminal." Heres the link to read the full article for your self, http://www.parenting.com/parenting/magazine/article/0,19840,1096032_1,00.html? or if you get the paper copy its on page 52.

Cassie,

Please don't take this the wrong way, but I had to make a very scary desicion to get Emily vaccinated against pertussis. Through me she has a family history of severe allergic reactions to the pertussis vaccination. When I recieved the dtp when I was 2 mos old I had a severe reaction that caused me to stop breathing twice, and I had to be brought back with rescue breathing. since Emmy is so much like me, we opted for saftey's sake to bypass the pertussis and go with the dt shots, I especially agreed with that desicion after she received a dtap by mistake at 6 months and developed the same welt at the injection site that I did. I was terrified and watched her breathe for weeks. However, after she turned 15 months we made a hard desicion that the threat of whooping cough was greater than the threat of an allergic reaction and I got her 2nd Dtap, which her doctor said will be enough to protect her. This is such a hard desicion though...I fear whooping cough, and although I know the dtap is 'safer' than the dtp I received 30 years ago...I am still scared...we need to protect our children from pertussis but we also need a SAFE way to do that too....

its been 2 weeks since she got her shot...no reaction yet....I am starting to calm down a little now.

Amy.

Yet more information http://sinclair-lee.blogspot.com/2004_05_01_sinclair-lee_archive.html scroll down to the bottom thats where her story starts with a picture, I also found more articles of babies who lost their lives to pertussis aka whooping cough it hurts so bad please please educate yourself and all those you know it honestly could save a life, I thought it didnt exist and it had been wiped out since you never hear about it anymore that isnt the case and you have proof of that please spread awareness.

I understand that everyone has different outlooks on the vaccines. Each parent can choose which vaccines they want their child to have. I was just agreeing that it is criminal for a doctor not to be able to diagnose whooping cough. IMO in regards to Sebanna, it was criminal for the doctors to ignore Lucys concerns and it was the doctors who are at fault for not treating her sooner.

Amen sister! What happened to Sebanna should have never happened this day and age! That child had to be really sick to have passed away like that. There is no reason that she wasn't tested..no reason. It's sad that it takes something like her passing to make dr's be more aware of it. I mean, it's just like how certain places need a red light or a turn light put up but yet they wait til there are a certain number of wrecks or deaths before they do anything about it. That shouldn't happen! I'm furious~and scared for my kids too. It almost makes me feel that during sick months I should hoard them up in the house.

Sorry Lucy that you had to go through all this, but know that you ARE making a difference to people!

Please know I do not post these links or stories to upset people I just wish to spread awareness on an illness I like so many other parents thought was pretty much gone, until it struck me proving its not, each little baby that has to die nomatter the cause saddens me so much more than i can type onto a page, so while you may wonder why I just keep on with this thread please know I only want to prevent pertussis by taking the first step which is awareness there are more stories of preciousl ittle ones below.

That is so very sad! I thought of you and Sebanna when I got Bethany's immunizations on Wednesday. It is so senseless for these babies to have to suffer this way.

Lucy,
I just wanted to say that as a public health worker, I've seen these case numbers increase over the past few years. You're right, no one should have to endure the pain you are going through because of this disease. I am so sorry for the loss of your beautiful daughter. Unfortunately, the need for awareness about this disease and many other preventable diseases is much too great. I applaud your efforts to make the reality of this disease known. good luck to you and your family.

Amanda, thank you for thinking of us it really does mean alot to know people remeber.

Joyce, thank you and I agree this and so many other preventable dieases need awareness so desperately.

Thank you both for your replies, I passed out a bunch of my awareness cards especially to the people with kids even more so to those with babies and I watched many intently read them and save them which felt great.

New article dated 10/07/2005 titled "Colorado
State leading nation in whooping-cough cases" http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_3094276

Article titled "1.4M children's deaths preventable" dated 9/29/2005, http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2005-09-29-unicef-kids-vaccines_x.htm?csp=34

This also came from a recent article "One case of pertussis -- whooping cough -- was diagnosed in a 2-month-old infant rescued from a roof in New Orleans and taken to Tennessee, the disease agency said. The baby was being treated with antibiotics and people who had come in contact with the infant were being tested for the illness."

http://wcco.com/seenon/local_story_255092740.html A article with the story of a baby who died shortly after being hosplized.

This came from another 2005 article "Infant dies of whooping cough at MUSC"

COLUMBIA -- An infant has died from whooping cough, the first death reported in South Carolina from the disease in nearly three years, the state health department said Friday.

The agency also is investigating a second death in the Upstate.

The infant died Thursday at the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital in Charleston, the state Department of Health and Environment Control said.

Dr. Robert Ball, an infectious disease specialist in Charleston, said pertussis, known as whooping cough, is highly contagious and not always recognized by patients and physicians because symptoms are similar to other cough illnesses. It can be treated with antibiotics.

DHEC said it's important children receive pertussis vaccinations on schedule.

Yet another article in this one an adult broke ribs from the coughing spells as is somewhat common http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1351886/posts

http://www.cdc.gov/od/oc/media/pressrel/r051109.htm Please read this link they are now reccomending adults get the vaccine
quote:
The ACIP recommended that adults receive a booster dose of Tdap vaccine against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis if they have not received a tetanus and diphtheria (Td) booster dose in ten or more years. Adults should receive a single dose of Tdap to replace a single dose of Td. Pertussis affects an estimated 600,000 adults every year, aged 20 to 64 years, and can result in weeks of coughing, cracked ribs from severe coughing spells, pneumonia, and other complications.

Tdap should also be given to adults who will have close contact with an infant less than 12 months of age, ideally at least one month before beginning close contact with infants. In situations when it is important to protect against pertussis, intervals shorter than 10 years since the last Td vaccination may be used. A 2-year interval between Td and Tdap is suggested to reduce the risk of reactions following vaccination.

“Infants less than 12 months of age have a high risk of pertussis-related complications, hospitalizations and death. Vaccinating adult contacts may reduce the risk of transmitting pertussis to infants” said Dr. Steve Cochi, acting director of CDC’s National Immunization Program. “Although pertussis is most serious in infants, it can also be serious in adults. Even adults who don’t typically come in contact with young children should be vaccinated

Hi Ladies,

This past winter, here near Chicago, Pertussis was quite bad. We received a notice from the grade school that Pertussis was going around. My eldest and my Nanny caught it. My Nanny already has chronic lung problems and an exceptionally poor immune system, she ended up in the hospital with pneumonia.

I ahd no idea that pertussis was so deadly to babies. I do know about RSV. When Tori was a month old she developed RSV and was hospitalized. Since then I have been vigilent about notifying other families about I also invested in getting a bunch of those small hand antibacterial lotions and have them hung or sitting all over the house (bathroom, refridgerator door, dining room table, on the computer key board and around my Nanny's belt loop.)

I confess, I used to think that Mom's that were paranoid about germs were nutz, I know now that I have been the one who is nutz. Jillian is going to be a winter baby, born right in the middle of flu and rotovirus season. She will not be going out and will have few visitors.

Lucy, Thanks so much for posting all this information. I know it is all very sad. I don't like the fact that they wait to give the vaccinations until the child is 4 months old around here. Pretty scary to me.

nope I remember with alex he got sick around 9 weeks old after he had all of his 2 month shots and his doctor tested him for pertusis because of the constant cough he had. He made the comment then that he had not yet gotten the vaccination. They are trying new things around here something they call combo shots and i don't know why but he specifically said they get that at 4 months. YUCK

That seems crazy (them waiting until 4 months) I dont think I would go for that, I know they were even testing to see if they could give it to them immediately after birth so they would have protection sooner but heres a link to the CDC's immunization schedule http://www.cdc.gov/nip/recs/child-schedule.PDF#search='cdc%20pertussis%20shot%20schedule'where it says they are supposed to get the first one at two months.
