| Has anyone taken Atenolol during pregnancy? I am curently taking 25 mg once per day for tachycardia. I plan on TTC very soon but am concerned about this medication. Has anyone been advised by their doctor to not become pregnant while on this medication? If you did take it during pregnancy were there any side effects such as IUGR? |

| I was taking atenolol for preventricle contractions when I conceived my daughter 7 years ago. At my first appt, which was around 10 weeks gestation my OB switched me to Labetolol instead. My daughter is very healthy and I had no problems during that pregnancy. If you are worried I would ask to be switched now to a safer version of a beta blocker. Good luck... |

| I was put on atenolol during my second pregnancy, and I credit it for getting me as far as I got- 36 weeks. It isn't the preferred drug for pregnancy, but in my (non-medical) opinion, I haven't seen anything else work quite so well for tachycardia. The studies do show that atenolol can make you at higher risk of iugr, but that risk can be mitigated by adjusting the dose accordingly if a change in the growth pattern is seen during serial ultrasounds for growth. This is probably something you'd want to discuss with your doc now, so you can think about it for a bit. Best wishes and good luck! |

| I took atenolol also, was switched to methyldopa when the specialist picked up my care - he said it was preferred to atenolol. But I did take atenolol for 3 months during pregnancy and my son is healthy. |

| I took 75 mg. of Atenolol throughout my pregnancy. My son had IUGR and was born at 35 weeks weighing only 3 pounds and 12 ounces. It is category D. Many others on this board have been successful with it so I guess it varies from one person to the next. Good Luck! |

I took atenolol with both my ds and dd and was on a fairly high dose throughout both my pregnancies.
I had been advised the same thing as Laura, but my peri kept a close watch on growth throughout the pregnancies. |

Hey! We've already emailed about this but, wanted to post it here too. I was on atenolol from weeks 15-30 and also credit it for much of my great success.
I think we've had some other posts about this recently, I'll see if I can dig up some links. |

Hi,
I was only on atenolol before I was pregnant, during pregnancy, post-partum, and never stopped taking it. It was first prescribed to me preconception, and my peri kept me on it and is still monitoring it ~ no IUGR, in fact, I credit my peri and him keeping me on atenolol to my twins and I being alive today. No preeclampsia while I was pregnant, and I was induced and delivered two healthy twins with no growth or health issues. |

| It's interesting to see how different docs do things. My Ob told me that Labetolol was much safer than atenolol and it basically did the same thing for tachycardia and PVC's and mytral valve prolapse. I wonder why more docs don't switch patients to the safer med...? |

| I think they work similiarly in theory, but labetalol isn't used much outside of pregnancy because it doesn't work as well. At least that's what my doc said. |

| As many of us have stated here, doctors approach meds differently, and for me there was no safer drug than atenolol and no better doctor for me than my perinatologist. The medication treated my high cardiac output and fast pulse. My peri did wonders with atenolol: it was totally safe for my babies and I during pregnancy, and there is no question that if I do get pregnant again, I'll go to the same perinatologist and be on the atenolol. Under his very watchful eye, my twins had no IUGR and the blood flow to them was fine; there was a wonderful balance struck between my bp being under control (no preeclampsia during pg) and the twins growing and receiving the perfect amount of blood/nutrients. Again I credit the atenolol, my peri, & his wonderful expertise for a great outcome and the twins and I being alive today. He was always able to tell us why he prescribed what he prescribed, how it worked, what was going on in my body and with the twins, and gave that precious gift of peace of mind to my husband and I, knowing that we were safe and closely monitored. |
