A week before I delivered my son, I experienced severe chest pain that would radiate around to my back. Usually after a couple of hours with the pain I would vomit which would give me some relief. Called the nurse at my doctor's office. She said it sounded like indigestion and I should go see my family practioner. I wasn't going to see my family practitioner for heartburn. Two days went by with no symptoms. The next two nights I literally thought I was going to die because the pain was so fierce. When I saw my OB/Gyn she didn't seemed alarmed when I explained to her what was going on. I was adament that she get that baby out of me. I was almost 37 wks. She reluctantly did and ultrasound where she discovered I had a pocket of fluid around my baby's head and that was it. I was admitted to the hospital. Pain came back that night. When they started the induction that next morning they of course took blood for a blood workup. When the results came back my nurse said this was some of the worst blood work they had ever seen. My liver enzymes were elevated and my platelet level had dropped to 31,000. Blood pressure at that point was 160/99. I was diagnosed with severe preeclampsia. I want to know if I should have been diagnosed with HELLP Syndrome. The odds of getting HELLP again and preeclampsia are significantly different.

I will let the experts officially weigh in but from my understanding of the diagnostic criteria (platelets less than 100,000; BP higher than 140/90 and elevated liver enzymes) you had HELLP. What that means is your risk of reoccurence is greater. Some experts discussed this already in depth. You can find that link by going to the search button above and searching for the term "Sibai". He is one of the nation's authorities about HELLP and talks about your risk of reoccurence. It may help to know that preeclampsia and HELLP are all part of a syndrome of events--some are just further down the pike...

I want applaud you for being so proactive in your care. It is possible you saved two lives that day. Thank you for sharing that with us.

Take care,
