| OK. . . I know I'm already crazy. . BUUUUT. . . I'm having the strangest sleep sensations. First, let me start off by saying, since I was a teenager, I've had hypnagogic hallucinations, which are mild hallucinations upon falling asleep, usually of a figure standing the doorway; I scream and then it's over. . . but lately I've been having a "different" kind of hallucination. Lately, I've been fainly hearing my husband's clock radio. I'll get up in the middle of the night and stand by it and listen to see if I hear it. My alarm clock with red numbers gets "moltent." The red gets really deep and the color surges, like a lava lamp. And finally, I'm having ceiling fan issues. I wake up two and three times a night and the ceiling fan is taking on different shapes and I squint to figure out what's there. Sometimes there are baseball bats for the fan blades, sometimes the light shades are different objects, sometimes there are things hanging from it. SOOOO, and I the only soul on earth that's experienced such a thing in pregnancy??? |

| I'm not taking anything before bed other than my MVI and iron. But, I am taking an antibiotic in the morning and prednisone with my regular meds. Although, I can't say for sure whether or not the "hallucinations" started before or after the prednisone. |

| Although rare, hallucinations are a side effect of prednisone...basically seeing or hearing things that are not there. Not common among the normal list of side effects, but it is a rare, potential one. You might want to talk to your dr. about it. Prednisone can also raise your blood pressure, something else you might want to ask about! :) Hope that helps.. |

| Hmmm. I have those occasionally, too, but I'm not pregnant. Also, the only thing I take with any regularity is lda. I never thought of them as hallucinations, but I guess they are. That's kind of freaky. |

Stacey! I had the clock radio thing going on when I was pregnant. It was like it turned on to "talk radio" or something...pretty quietly. The first couple of tiems it happened I woke DH up and told him he was sleeping through his alarm clock. I would wake up and listen...then go his side of the bed...listen...flip the on/off button and realize it wasn't the radio. Then I'd still be hearing it so I'd go downstairs to see if we left the tv on...which I knew good and well we hadn't...but I'd think maybe one of the dogs stepped on the remote and turned it on or something. Usually it would stop by this time...but as soon as I was laying back in bed and I'd start to fall back asleep it would happen again. I don't know how much sleep I lost getting out of bed to try to figure out where the "talk show noise" was coming from. I didn't tell anybody at the time because I thought how bizarre must that sound. They'll think I'm downright nuts.
I must say that I too have suffered from the hypnagogic hallucinations as long as I can remember...they come and go fortunately and it isn't too often that I have problems. I also suffered from sleep walking, and eating, and phone dialing when I was younger. I don't sleep "walk" anymore, but still have extremely vivid dreams that last forever because I don't get much deep rem sleep...hence my fatigue. I do occassional sit up and talk in my sleep still. Good thing DH is a heavy sleeper.
Maybe that predisposes us to this sort of thing....
Perhpas your doc can give you something to ease these things. I'm not really sure if sleeping medication is helpful for this type of thing (it's probably not). I think I heard that unisom is safe to take during pregnancy...but don't quote me on that. I would guess that prednisone might increase these events...especially mixed with all these hormones we have. Let us know what happens. It totally stinks when you're tired already, to have to deal with night time intrusions into your sleep. Take care! |

| Well, Kara, us Wisconsin girls are two peas in a pod aren't we!!! My hypnogogia started in my late teens and were really "scary" until I actually found out there was a name for them, which was probably when I was in my early 30's. Now it's like no big deal. . . and DH has become particularly used to the nighttime screams. They are much more frequent and intense as my stress level goes up. I was reading on-line today that hypnogogic hallucinations can also be auditory and tactile, that the hallucinations can change form and color, which makes me feel better. . . in that maybe stress, hormones, and prednisone must might be aggrevating the hypnogogia. I had to laugh when you said you'd wake up DH and tell him his alarm was going off. . . I did that several nights in a row this last week. My stress level has been up this week. I'm feeling particularly anxious about being 20 weeks . . . just a few more weeks was when I started having problems last pregnancy. |

Mine started in at least my early teens...perhaps before that. Weird thing is that my "visions" as I prefer to call them, are usually black and white, with only minor bits of color. Although my regular dreaming is vivid color. And truthfully I never associated the radio thing with the hypnogogia. I even looked out the window to see if someone had a car radio on or something. It's SO REAL that it's hard to understand it wasn't really happening. Here is my conversation with DH about this stuff: "Do you hear that?" "Hear what?" "Like a radio is on." "Huh???" "You don't hear that?" "Hear what?" "Nevermind. Sigh."
Le tme know if you want to chat on the phone or something. I have free minutes after 8pm I think. I'm sure you are anxious and stressed. I can't even imagine. Thinking about you. ((HUGS)) |

LOL. . .your conversations are just like ours. With my lava lamp alarm clock, I'll say, "Dave, Dave, look at my clock. . .See that, there it goes. . . . No, it's fine. . . no it's not, you don't see that??" Sometimes I feel like a nutcase!
I've got a busy night tonight . . . Gotta get my haircut and go to Target and get pick up car seats for Kayce. They are the only one's that carry the Cosco Gotham carseat, and out of our three Targets, the east is the only ones with them in stock. I'll give you a call soon. . .I've got you in the "phonebook." |

Just wanted to say how cool that you guys have each other!! I would think having those symptoms would make you go crazy so it's great to have someone to talk to about it!!
I hope they get better!! It's enough to be pregnant and worry about pre-e but to then also worry about those symptoms is too much! |

Stacey- Can't say I've had any symptoms like that, but I have had very vivid/realistic (and sometimes very weird) dreams during pregnancy. My BP medications also made me have very vivid dreams, too. My only hallucinations came after my daughter was born -- like I would have a pillow in my arms in bed and I would tell my husband I was holding her or to watch out for her. I attributed those to lack of sleep. I am often a source of middle of the night entertainment for my husband because I talk in my sleep too! Maybe it's a winter-in-Wisconsin thing! Hope it gets better for you Stacey! |
