If you had to be readmitted because your preeclampsia flared up again after your baby was born or you developed preeclampsia only after delivery- chime in here!

I was readmitted with postpartum preeclampsia ten days after my baby was born- and quickly recovered after that with meds, and was back to normal BP's two weeks after that. Keeping my fingers crossed that your hypertension resolves soon, celticepona!

I had PIH that turned into severe post partum PE 3 days after my son was born and spent 10 days in hospital 2 days ICU. Very long recovery 3 months or so but all back to normal now.

I was back in the hospital the following day after I left. Was put back on mag for one more day, but had to stay a total of 3 more days. But I am glad to say I am doing much better now, and everything has gone back to normal.

I was diagnosed with PE during pregnancy, but it got much worse 10 days PP and was readmitted and placed on a Mag drip. I am 6 months PP and still onmeds although a much lower dosage. I was on 400mg of Labetolol and 50mg Aldactone. I now am on 100mg of one and 25 mg of the other. I just think it takes some peoples bodies longer to recover.

I had a completely normal pregnancy without any complications. I developed PE about a week after delivery. I had horrible swelling and a headache that woulnd't quit. My bp at home was 210/100. The nurse didn't believe us so she took it and it was 210/110. I was admitted and given IV labatelol and mag sulfate. I was discharged on the labetalol (400mg). My bp was still too high (160/90) so they switched it at around 2 months postpartum to lisinopril/HCTZ (10, 12.5) since I couldn't breastfeed anyway. I'm 4.5 months postpartum now and my bp usually runs 110-120/65-75 now. Prepregnancy (and during pregnancy) my normal bp was about 110/60. I am desperately hoping I can get off all the meds sometime soon.

I was 4 days postpartum and never knew what preeclampsia was when I got my headache. Apparently either did my doctors. Still not diagnosed at day 6 I started seizing. It was a long recovery back to normal 3-4 months.

One week and five weeks after delivery, both times required post-partum hospitalization. No problems during pregnancy, high blood pressure a few hours before delivery, "fixed" with Magnesium Sulfate.

One week after I delivered my last child I developed PP PE and hung out in L&D triage for one night while they watched my BP and other labs. Was sent home on a BP med but only took it for a few days before developing a rash. DC'd the med and my BP was has been normal ever since. I've had PE during 3 pregnancies but this was the first time I'd had PP PE.

I was admitted at 36 weeks with 220/120 practically out of nowhere. That was 20 months ago, and I am still struggling with high bp. I've been eating right and walking like 3 miles a day, but still need the meds to stay down. AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH!!!! We want to have more kids, but don't know, because it would be bad to start out high. Has anyone gone on to be on meds while pregnant and had a "normal" pregnancy?

I stayed on mag 3 days post after my daughters birth (kidneys weren't functioning and still high BP) and on BP med for 1 month. I was back to normal BP after about 2 months.

Hello everyone. Feel so blessed to have found this site and forum...After a fairly normal pregnancy (despite horrible migraines in 1st trimester that my OB shrugged off as 'progesterone poisoning') I had bleeding and then my water broke at 25 weeks 3 days. After 3 days of mag (hell) and severe migraine we delivered Lucy caesarean. 36 hours later I was still in the hospital, as she lay in NICU at less than 1.5 pounds, I had a sudden blood pressure spike 220/160, what felt like a stroke, vomited 36 times, chest tightness and saw spots. The EKG registered a heart attack and my blood showed enzyme leakage.. Had subsequent normal angiogram and normal brain MRI. Was on BP meds for 2 months--- fine now (thrilled to say after a very hard road Lucy is walking, doing amazingly well and is miraculous!). My docs would NEVER SAY I HAD PRECLAMPSIA because I did not have protein in my urine or adema...only the cardiologist will say that's what I had. I believe I had it all along and it caused placental abruption...Am very very worried about having second baby -anyone else been through something similar?

LGs Mommy,

Just wanted to say hi and welcome to you. I am so thankful to read that both you and Lucy are doing well now. What a little miracle she is!

If you're thinking about #2, I'd suggest getting in to see a perinatalogist for a preconception consult. He/she can help you make sense of last time and, work on a game plan for next time. You'd definitely be considered high risk so, any future pregnancies should be followed by someone well versed in preeclampsia. Here are a couple of websites that you can use to search for a high-risk doctor in your area: www.nasshp.org and www.smfm.org

I just saw that you're also in Southern CA, I'm going to send you a quick email as well.

You also may want to post this in the "Ask the Experienced" forum as it will likely be seen by more women there and you might get much more advice.

Again, welcome and best of luck to you!

June 8 my wife delivered a beautiful 8lb 5oz boy in perfect health. She looked super following delivery and was released from the hospital the next day despite a lingering headache she described as "extremely painful".

Every time she complained about the headache, someone would ask her if it got worse when she sat up or stood, she kept saying yes. They all immediatly claimed it was an "Epidural Headache" which would go away in a few days. She had somewhat high blood pressure, but thay assumed it was due to the strain of the supposed Epidural Headache. Looking back I now realize that not only was the pain worse when she sat or stood, it was worse whenever she moved, and terribly bad even when she lay still. We bought the collective expert opinions and decided to come home to rest a day or so rather than have an Epidural Blood Patch (or better yet, treatment for Post Partum Pre-Eclampsia) done right away. I bottle fed the baby through the nights so she could sleep and recover. I am sick to my stomach now, thinking of the path of extended pain we had now sent her upon...

She endured the pain for 2 more nights, (and me bottle feeding so she could sleep) the second morning she could hardly move. We took her back to OB Triage for the Blood Patch, she noticed no difference. Again her high blood pressure was noted, but discounted again as being due to the trauma of the supposed "Epidural Headach". Again the professional opinions of all the health care providers made sense to us and we decided to give it another day or so for the pain meds to wear off and see for sure if it had worked or not...

The next morning my wife was in the worst pain I have ever seen her in, far worse than childbirth itself. We phoned the Anesthesiologist and the On Call Doctor from her OB/GYG group, they advised the emergency room. Of course, again, 100% of the Health Care Provideres we now had to tell the story to immediatly reached the conclusion that she was experiencing an Epidural Headache and had nothing to worry about as the pain would soon go away. They did a catscan, gave her some morphine intraveneously. When she showed relief from the endless pain they were ready to release her to come home with some better pain meds, fortunatly they double checked with the OB/GYN On Call Doctor, who made note of her blood pressure, still 178/104, and told them to keep her there...

4 days later, after peaking at 194/104 in spite of the drugs they were pushing into her body, the hypertension began to lessen. I'm not sure if the drugs they pushed were the best or not, but I am sure that, had I taken her home, we'd have been returning in an Ambulance, probably in a state of seizure. It's so confusing and frustrating, having to re-tell the story to half a dozen doctors, and a couple dozen nurses, and have virtually 100% (less one in our case thank God) of them immediatly assume it was an Epidural Headache. Even the last day in the hospital, with our MRI on hand confirming the trauma to the tissues and membranes of the brain and the proteins in the urine samples etc, yet another nurse asked if we had considered undergoing an additional Epidural Blood Patch since that would likely cure the still ongoing and very painful headache...

Nobody wants to admit this was Pre-Eclampsia, they desperatly want it to have been an Epidural Headache.

I hope to God some other Husband and Father to be out there reads this and becomes insistent that the Doctors confirm and rule out this condition for certain rather than letting them talk you and your wife into taking the path easiest for them to treat and understand as I let them do in my case. If she has a headache the likes of which shes never experienced before, that does not automatically mean she has an Epidural Headach, likewise, if it seems worse when sitting or standing up, or gets somewhat better when lying down, it does not for certain mean an Epidural Headach...

I see her in pain today, and that hurts, but not nearly so as the memory of the recent pain I saw her subjected to. I wish I could take it from her. I am sure this will turn out ok, the Internist claims the damage to the brain tissues and membranes is all reversable and when it heals the pain will go away. We have seen improvement already in the past 2 days. She has a way to go still...

My heros are all women...

Thanks,

Chris

My friend just delivered twins (36 weeks) this past Wednesday by c-section. Following surgery, she had a bad headache, had a seizure and her blood pressure skyrocketed. Her doctor said that she won't be able to drive for a year, has to arrange care for the babies (because she can't be left alone with them) and needs to be put on Dilantin. Is this a usual treatment course for eclampsia?

I had postpartum preeclampsia because I still had protein in the urine and BP stayed up there, but not as much. I became pregnant again when my baby was about 7 weeks old and I still had protein, but now I am PE free and almost 37 weeks!!!

I am 2 weeks post C-section with my daughter. I had PIH during pregnancy with BPs around 150s/90s. My doctor did not feel this warranted medication for treatment. The day after I came home from the hospital, I was short of breath, with increased pulse and BP 183/107, and swelling in my ankles. I went to the ER, and they ran a bunch of tests, one being a "D-dimer", which came back positive, so they thought I had a blood clot in my lung. The lung CT was negative for a clot but showed fluid in my lungs. They gave me lasix and drew off 8 pounds of fluid and sent me home. My blood pressures were unchanged for a couple of days, but then the bottom number went down into the 80s and 90s and has stayed there ever since. My blood pressures now run anywhere from 140s/80s to 180s/90s. I have no more swelling in my ankles, but I developed a headache yesterday, which I have been unable to get rid of, even taking hydrocodone twice a day. I returned to my OB who says my elevated BP is because of my weight; however, I weigh 45 pounds LESS than before I got pregnant, and my BP prior to pregnancy was 110s/70s. He refuses to admit there is anything wrong with having these BPs. I finally made an appointment with a general practitioner for Monday because I am scared this is something more severe like post partum pre-eclampsia. No one in my family listens to me either... they blindly listen to the doctors. Are these BPs I am having now (140s/80s to 180s/90s) suggestive of post-partum pre-eclampsia?

I would appreciate emails and/or posts to help me know what to do!

Thank you!

I have been lurking here a bit over the past several weeks, hoping to find some answers. I'll share my story. I had my eighth baby on June 30. In the very beginning of this pregnancy I had bleeding, a couple times it was actual bleeding that turned into spotting, this lasted almost 4 months. They believe it was the placenta and a small hemorage on the uterus. The Doc said my bp was up (around 145/96) two appointments in a row, so she put me on bp meds. (aldomet 250 mg 3 x a day) my bp was normal within a week (120/80) (I was also supplenmenting with calcium) My previous pregnancy (#7) started out with the bp the same way, only that time they said it was due to the increase in blood supply, it scared me nevertheless and I started to really watch what I ate, and ate a lot less of it. Took calcium and garlic tabs, bp stayed normal the rest of pregnancy. Had a c-section due to breech (footling) My bp was elevated at 6 week check, but nurse had me lay down and then rechecked, it was fine ????

SO back to current pregnancy :0) (hope I did not lose you) My bp continued fine thru pregnancy, I even dropped my meds to 2x a day, sometimes only took it once as my bp was getting tooo low. My last appointment it was up at 132/86 9had run out of calcium ?). Doc said it was okay. (I had gained over 30 pounds, I normally gain 20)
I went in to hospital to have a little pitocin to get baby to drop so we could break my water. Only baby hated the contractions and he turned. We stppoed the pit and I elected to have a c-section. I went into the surgery totally paniked, I had an epidural since it had already been administered from labor. I could not breathe or swallow and was so consumed with fear. It ended, and I was okay and relieved. But the anesthesiologist asked the nurse if there was an EKG machine in the room? She said no, but she could get one, he said no that was okay, he just wanted to check something but that it wasn't necessary...???? I wonder what this was about but no one said.

I asked to go home on day two, after much pleading my Doc allowed me. Our house is for sale and I pushed myself to get up and 'do more' so that my recovery would be quicker... (self diagnosis) A couple days later I swelled up so bad I could not bend my ankles or knees. My bp was 160/106 called the Doc and he asked if only one leg was swollen, I said No, he said it was just from all the meds and everything I was given at the hospital and I would be okay in a few days. Well days of this went by. Then my pain meds were gone (one week post partum) I called the nurse for refills and she asked if I could just go without pain meds, just take tylenol or advil, I said I guess so. Then I got the headache of all headaches, I assumed it was due to the pain meds wearing off, it took two days to go away. Went in for a 2 week check up, BP was 132/106, the Doc again said it was because of all I had been thru.

Recovery was going well, I thought, was very stressed, and post partum (baby blues, crying all the time) stressed with the realtors showing house all the time etc....... Would get a monster headache once a week that would take 3 days to get thru. Went in for 6 week check, Doc was delivering a baby they had to reschedule me. (I should have had the nurse check my BP) anyhow I came back at 8 weeks pp, my bp was 176/116. They Doc went nuts. Told me to get to my Gp within the week, made me promise. Now I was wondering if I should have quit my Bp meds from pregnancy, she did not think I would need them so I only took one every now and again for first week after delivery.

I went to see my regular doctor, nurse said my bp was 220/132 ( i could not believe) the Doc rechecked and she said 190/120...? She said she believed I had post-partum preeclampsia, and she would watch me for three months, if I still had it after that she would label me as having hypertension...

Well, she put me on Innopran 80 mg, time release for two weeks, I freaked out as to what this would do to the baby since I was nursing him. I began to have severe headaches, panic attacks, anxiety etc.... Went back in to see her 2 weeks later, no change in bp, so she doubled my meds up to 80 mgs twice a day (propranolol) this made baby very sleepy, after two weeks no change in bp, and I started to develop tingling, feeling very cold, could not go to sleep, would doze and then awake abruptly with a jolt, and the cycle would continue, more headaches. Bp would register 200/120, two hours after taking meds and resting. But when I checked bp right before my next dose was due my bp was 150/100, after house cleaning etc... SO I cut my meds back to once a day, and it has been down all week averaging 145/98. Went to see Doc yesterday and it was 132/108 . She wants me to take the meds twice a day again and says my side effects were mental.....? of course at home bp was lower, as stress of seeing doc was gone.

I believe sugar is playing a part here as I feel bad when I have sugar and bp does rise (also brings on headache), and this med actually raises your blood sugar levels making matters worse. I believe this is a post partum thing, plus stress and I could lose a few pounds as well :0)

My big concern are the meds, what is safe for baby etc.... any knowledge, experiences from others would be helpful. I get the feeling my Doc does not know much about this condition or meds....

Thanks for listening and any advice.

Hi everyone. I've been very interested in reading your experiences. I was wondering if you could help me out. I am in a Human Biology class right now and working on a research paper. My sister-in-law was diagnosed with postpartum preeclampsia twice, and strongly advised to not have any more children. Because this subject is pretty close to home, I've decided to do my research on that. I was wondering if anyone could help me out on this. First of all, finding a lot of information on it is pretty difficult. I'm seeing that there isn't a lot of it out there. What kinds of treatement did your doctors give you? Was it basically just medications. So that's what I'm kind of looking for right now. I would appreciate any help you could give me. I hope everything turns out well for all of you!

I was only discharged from the hospital 4 days PP and the very next day was readmitted with very high BP, continuing visual problems, constant headache and nausea that led to vomitting. I was put back on the Mag for over night and released the next day. I was on BP meds for one month PP and wasn't really back to myself for about 2. My BP's are fine now...I continue to check them from time to time more out of curiosity than anything. I had to monitor it very closely for about a month and a half PP. I continue to have some visual disturbances that weren't there before my pg. The onset of the vision problems was about 2 days PP and I was checked by neurology while in the hospital. They found nothing. My health is fine so far and I'm about 5 months PP now...thinking of going in for a good physical soon.

Hi Sheri- since this is a "Roll Call" where people are supposed to just introduce themselves, you'll probably get more replies if you start your own thread in "Ask the Experienced": http://www.preeclampsia.org/forum/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=4

I'm sure there will be plenty of people who can help you there. Good luck! Have you googled postpartum preeclampsia yet? You probably won't find any "books" on postpartum preeclampsia, but there should be plenty of journal articles!

Forlogan: I have lost some vision in my right eye that even contacts and glasses can't perfect. The eye doc says he can't find anything wrong with the eye and it might be a little swelling from the pregnancy/PE. My daughter is six months now, so I'm not sure how it could still be "swelling." I have another appointment next month, but let me know if you find out anything about your vision. My BP is still borderline 140/80 (normally 120/60) and I had a trace of protein at three months.

Hi there,

I'm new to this forum and wanted to add my story.
After my first child, I was readmitted to the hospital with BP of 200/100- got that lovely Mag and went home 3 days later. I've been on BP meds since and thats been since Sept 2002. I just had our 2nd child and thought I was out of the woods since I had been on meds. Six weeks postpartum, I was having tunnel vision, numbness in my face and tingling in my left arm. I went to the ER and was admitted. They couldn't get my BP down and was put on nipride (I think that's what its called) which finally did the trick. I got every test in the book and they couldn't find a reason for the hypertension. It hasn't gone away and we've had a pre-conception consult concerning future pregnancies (sp?).
Am I crazy for even thinking about another child? The Dr. at my consult wouldn't tell me not to have another but I'm not sure that's what she was hinting to. However she did say to wait 9 more months to try to conceive. I don't know. Anyway, my husband is afraid that I wouldn't survive a 3rd child.
Actually I never spilled any protein so technically I didn't have preeclampsia- what would it be toxemia? PIH?
So, hi everyone and I'm so glad to know I'm not a freak of nature and others have experienced the same craziness!

something odd happened to me after i had my son, but my dr at the time would not give me any answers as to what happened other than claiming an allergy. i went into the hospital with a normal labor. I was in labor for 8 hours and 3 of those were pushing because my son was too big and posterior. after three hours the dr decided it was time for intervention. since i had no meds or epidural he gave me a pudental block and used the vacuum to get my baby out. after that he gave me a shot of stadol in my iv. everyone left the room and my husband went to get me food. all of a sudden i started to see 2 of everything with very blury vision and then could feel my breathing start to slow down. i tried to push the nurse call button but it did not work, so i thought i was screaming, but must not have been because noone came. i pulled all my ivs out because i thought it was one of the meds that did it to me. next thing i know there were 5 nurses around me screaming and asking me my name. all were checking my reflexes and wanted the dr to come back, but he did not. my husband walked in to this nightmare. my blood pressure was high, but i don't know why to this day. i have sent for my medical records from the hospital for my perinatologist to review. i am in tears typing this because i really thought i would die. i am pregnant now and am hoping when i go to the dr tomorrow he can tell me what happened. So, i am not sure if it was post pardum pre-e or an allergy. my new dr told me that it is very uncommon for blood pressure to increase from an allergy, so we shall see and i have been praying a whole lot.

Hi everyone - I am a new member from Ireland - anyone else out there from Ireland. I am 8/9wks pregnant and I am hoping that all will be well. My 1st pregnancy was a nightmare with pre eclampsia and post eclampsia - i never made it out of the hospital - 220/180 - did'nt realise until afterwards how close i came to meeting the man upstairs. Now before I go on - this is my personal opinion and that of my sister-n-law - pre and post eclampsia is not taken seriously in ireland until you swell like a melon - your bp is really bad - and protein in your urine is 2+. Arrogance and ignorance maybe but i can tell you from personal experience it was not brought to my attn how serious it is by the hospital but by my own doctor and he ended up with a fight on his hands to have me admitted at 34 wks. The PE kicked in at about 24 wks but the hospital "missed" it. Go figure. Not going back there to have this baby thats for sure. Bye for now. Harrys mom

Hello. I recently (1/16/05) have been discharged from the hospital because of preeclampsia. I had a baby boy delivered by c-section because of high blood pressure, discharged on a Thursday and readmitted on Sunday night. Right now I am trying to lower my bp with Labetaol (500mg). Tonight it was 138/82 the lowest it's been since before the birth. Now if I can get rid of this headache...

Mommaofthree- I am so very sorry that I didn't see this yesterday, but when you've had preeclampsia, especially if you've been diagnosed with postpartum preeclampsia, please go straight to the emergency room if you have headaches that aren't relieved by tylenol especially if you have any other symptoms of central nervous system disturbance like blurry vision or other visual disturbances. Could you please check in when you see this and let us know that you're ok?

I go to the doctor today. Last Friday I told my doctor that I was still having headaches. She seemed concerened and increased my bp meds. I stopped taking Percacet and it has helped a gread deal.

What is the usual time frame that the bp goes down? I've heard it can take six weeks post to get things under control. This is all very new to me.

Sheesh, what mommies go through to have children.

Hello all!

Well, just 6 days after delivery (3 days after discharge) I was readmitted with bp of 226/102. WOW! The hospital I delivered at (a high-risk hospital) didn't provide meds, nor did they provide Lasix; I felt Lasix was a must-have after an over 60 pound weight gain in just 2 weeks!

I was readmitted to a local hospital where I was prescribed Lasix (given 4xs the normal dose) and Procardia. The bps were slow to come down. Then, they only came to the 140s/80s. The Lasix however was a wonder drug! I tinkled all night long and lost over 20 pounds by the END OF THE NEXT DAY. (I lost an additional 40 over the next week!)

My bps are still nowhere near normal. They have remained 140s/80s and I absolutely hate taking Procardia. I am now four months postpartum and obviously STILL preeclamptic.

I developed it 4 days after birth and readmitted for 2 days, on mag 48 hours and sent home on bp meds. Am pregnant again and hoping for the best (and not to have to experience it during pregnancy). I had no idea you could develop it after delivery and had it not been for a killer headache wouldn't have even called dr.

Just delivered my healthy baby girl last Thursday - was not diagnosed with Pre-E before delivery, although I was very swollen in my feet/ankles/legs, and gained 50 lbs. BP was never high, and no protein in my urine. About 36 hours after delivery by BP shot up - still no protein, but some blood work was a bit off. They kept me there until Monday evening... thought about Magnesium drip but never did it since I only had a couple of symptoms. They started me on 400 mg of Labetlol before discharging me. I went to my OB today for blood work, and my BP was first 170/110!! After lying down and doing some deep breathing it went down to 150/90 (which was around my BP at the hospital).. 10 minutes later it was the same. I will follow up with a hypertension specialist next week - they may up my dosage. It's stressful, and I am sad that I can't just enjoy my baby. How do you gals deal with the anxiety?

Hi, I am new to this website and am just so happy to have a place to share my story. At 33 weeks gestation, my BP started to climb to 140/90, which was elevated for me since my BP normally ran 100/60. My doctors were not concerned at that point. When I went back to the doctor a week later, my BP was 160/94, swelling in my ankles, 2+ protein in my dipstick urine and had gained 7lbs in one week. I was sent home and put on bedrest, which did not work for me. My husband is in the military and currently deployed to Iraq. He left for Iraq in January 2005 when I was about 32 weeks gestation. We also have another child, who was 2 1/2 when all this was going on and my family lives far away. So, bedrest didn't work...... I went back for an appt 3 days later and was admitted into the hospital at 34 1/2 weeks for complete bedrest.

My husband was not allowed to return from Iraq, so my mother in law came to be with my 2 1/2 year old daughter and my sister came to be with me. (My mother had passed away from kidney cancer in May 2004) During the time in the hospital, my BP kept creeping up and at 36 1/2 weeks, I progressed into severe preeclampsia with a 24 hour urine protein showing 3 grams. I was immediately induced, put on a Magnesium drip and delivered a beautiful baby girl, Alaina Marie, weighing 5lbs 12 ounces on Feb 28, 2005. I was sent home 2 days later with my BP ranging 140-80/90 and NO BP Medication!!

10 days postpartum after family and friends had all gone home and I was by myself, I started to develop a headache. Being a nurse, I checked my own Blood pressure, and it was 160/90. I went back to the ER with my 2 girls---My blood pressure at this point had climbed to 170/108. I was immediately placed on a cardiac moniter, had IV hydralazine and placed on a magnesium drip again. I had to have friends come and pick up my daughters to care for them while I was admitted into the ICU overnight. I was discharged the next day on Procardia.

Once again, family members had to come and rotate staying with me since I was so fearful to be alone. I was on the Procardia for about 6 weeks and then weaned myself off with my doctors instructions. My BP is back to normal and my baby is now 6 months old. This was the scariest time in my life and I don't know how I made it through. My husband did get to meet his new daughter when she was 6 weeks old. He has not seen her since and won't see her until January 2006. I would like to have another baby in the future, but am so fearful this will all happen again. My first pregnancy was normal. Thanks for listening and letting me share my story.

Hello, my name is Amber and I just found this site....how GREAT and helpful. I really thought i was the only one....First of all i found this site because....well i am sitting here going over all my medical records from 5 1/2 years ago, because i am still wondering what the hell happened to me and i found this term "post eclamptic seizure in the postpartum period" in one of the diagnostic impressions sections and i typed it in the computer and this is what i found, i feel so good. I guess it is good for curious minds to explore meanings. Plus my doctors to this day do not have any explanation to verbally give me.
So, what happened was....I had the perfect pregnancy, completely healthy, everything was great, delivery went great....i got this headache when i was home from the hospital that wouldn't go away, no amounts of advil, nothing...i overlooked it, because well i am at the time a completely normal healthy 19 girl who has a baby now!!!! Well, 6 days after I delivered my love of my life, Alex, i had strokes and siezures.....Was in the hospital for 5 days, on anti-seizure meds for 6 months and am completely "fine" now. Its been more than 5 years, i want another baby, but am scared....and i still have nightmeres and am afraid to go to bed at night because of what happened. I was so lucky, because this happened when my mom was up from NY visiting me and the baby, at 8 in am., if she wasnt there to find me, my boyfriend wouldnt have been home from work till 6 and the baby was only 6 days old, boy God was watching out!!
So, well its a long intro, maybe someone will read, but just so flabergasted to found somewhere to share the terrible experience, with others "just like me", .....

Hello! My name is Tawnya, and I live in Cincinnati, Ohio. I am writing this with a heavy heart as I learned my 29-year-old cousin is in ICU in West Virginia with what appears to be postpartum preeclampsia. She had a wonderful pregnancy with no complications and delivered a beautiful, healthy girl on September 13. On the night of the 19th she developed a severe headache and took her blood pressure because it was abnormally painful (thank goodness she is a RN). Her husband took her to the ER where she had a BP of 230/120(!), suffered two horrible seizures (she nearly bit her tongue in half), and coded. Thank God they were able to bring her back! She is still in ICU and is slowly recuperating. Two MRIs show no brain damage, so hopefully she will make a full recovery. I am so glad I found your website. I feel better now because I never heard of this condition before. I guess the one thing I don't understand is what causes this. Any insight you could give me would be appreciated. Please keep my beautiful cousin in your prayers as she recuperates. Thank you.

Hello all-my name is Cara and here is a bit of my story. I had a completely healthy pregnancy and no complications whatsoever until around 31 weeks 6 days. At that time I began to develop a headache that wouldnt go away with Tylenol. Actually, it came and went. On Monday (now 32 wks 1 day), I went to the hospital emergency room and BP was clost to 200 over 110 (I think). They admitted me and started me on a mag drip. My Dr. came in and told me that I had severe toxemia (specifically HELLP syndrome) and right after he left the room I seized. Was transferred by ambulance to a better hospital that was equipped with a really good neo-natal unit and had Lillian 2 days later by a c-section. My BPs stayed up AFTER delivery and I was discharged 5 days later on 500mg of labetalol (2x a day) .2mg of clonidine (3x a day) and when I went back to the Drs. two days later, he put me on a third prescription of vasotec 20mg (2x a day). I ended up weaning off the meds over a period of 3 months and now my BP is totally normal- well, except when I go to the Drs. office. It shoots up 30 points on each end. So, it normally runs around 100-110 over 55-70 and when the Dr takes it, its around 135-145 over 85-95. Kind of interesting. I say all of this to say, my pre-eclamptic symptoms didnt go away (especially the BP) for a while. But thankfully I'm fine now and my daughter is doing fabulous.

I was re-admitted 6 days pp with severe pppe. I had no idea you could develop this after delivery, in fact I had always heard that "delivery is the cure." I did have PIH during the last 5-6 months of the pregnancy. It's been 3 weeks and I'm still having high bp and am on medicine. The good news is we have a beautiful daughter.

Pe began at delivery, bp continued to be very high (170/95) for about 6 months until they found the right combo of meds. Then I was back in chronic hypertension mode.

I am pregnant with my 6th baby (20 weeks now)and my ob is staying pretty alert to me since I developed severe postpartum preeclampsia after the birth of my previous child. I went into early labor at 36 weeks due to a case of the flu that I had. My son was born with immature lungs and it was a very stressful time but he did well with some medication and I was moved to a regular room so I could stay there with him. I was allowed to stay in the nursery with him as he couldn't leave, and I stayed in there pretty much the whole time so I wasn't recieving the monitoring I should have been. I do remember starting to have headaches in the hospital and my legs and feet began to swell. Me and the baby were discharged after 5 days and that same night I began to feel very strange and faint and my bp rose to 140/95 and my pulse dropped to 43. All of a sudden I felt a sharp pain rise up into my head and explode and I had a siezure (I didn't know it was a seizure). When I came out of it I had a severe headache but didn't go to the hospital. The next morning my mom took me back to L&D and they did an MRI, bp was still up but they dismissed it and tried to give me a shot of demoral, which I refused due to breastfeeding. They gave me a pill instead and I came home and slept but woke up with a still terible headache. Went back to L&D to be evaluated for a spinal headache and was told I was fine. So as my health continued to deterioate I became my own physician and checked my own bp and it was steadily going up and was worse when I laid down. I made an appt with my general dr and was diagnosed with pnuemonia (it was actually fluid in my lungs from the bp) That night, 11 days after I gave birth, I drove myself to the ER because my head hurt so bad and my bp was so high. Upon arrival my bp was 195/120 and they couldn't get it down. They admitted me and treated me all day to no avail and finally that night sent me by ambulance to a bigger hospital 2 hours away. I was admitted into a CCU and put on nitroglycerin. They sent me home 3 days later on medication for "high blood pressure" but it didn't do a good job. Finally at my 6 week check-up my ob discovered protein in my urine and my bp still 150/100 and diagnosed me with post-partum preeclampsia. He treated me with Procardia and iron (I was very anemic) and in 2 weeks I was feeling like a new person! I tapered off of the med and have been fine since. My baby boy is a healthy 2 year old too, by the way. My ob this time is new to me but he's being very precautious, and has already done a 24 hour urine analysis to get a baseline for me. Also told me to take an aspirin a day to help prevent PPE this time. Has anyone else heard of this? Thankyou for letting me share my story. I knew what PE was but had no idea you could get it postpartum, and I think my life was in much risk simply because of the ignorance of doctors on this issue. I would like to see more people become aware of this and know the symptoms.

Hi! I am so glad I found this site, I had post partum eclampsia, I devloped a terrible headache 5 days post partum and went to casualty ( ER Dept) where I was admitted for two days with suspected brain clots/haemorrage??? then sent home with 'Just' a tension headache for the next three nights I took myself back to hospital and was sent home with the same diagnosis, the headache got worse, along with swelling, on the evening of day 10 I went to bed and had three grand mal seizures in my sleep and was rushed to hospital where they found my BP had spiked and I had protein in my urine ( I had had protein in my urine since before the birth and it was even noticed before I was induced!!) By the time I arrived I had to have my airways supported and they thought I had organ damage, however once they pushed the Mag Sulphate I recovered remarkably quickly, after three days I was home, the hospital are covering them selves with the line.. whenever you came in your Bp was normal, im not a doctor but even I know, proteins and swelling with a bad headache should have told them it was pre eclampsia!!! Im now finding it really hard to recover and don't feel 100% and im not sure if I ever will, to top it off they think the seizures have now left me with epilepsy! This was only 5 weeks ago so I am ever hopeful that my drugs will start to work soon and I can enjoy my two beautiful children!

Had PP Eclampsia, had 3 seizures, and now have anxiety/panick attacks, but am moving forward!!!!! Mum to beautiful Oliver 3, Jack 10 wks.

Better late than never I suppose.....

I developed "severe" PE about 48 hours PP after my first child was born. I was still in the hospital at the time recovering from my c/s. I received mag. for about 24 hours. I had been limping along with ever increasing BPs and swelling for weeks before (although I had little or no protein in the urine). BP never really recovered much and I'm still on BP meds.

BP went really high after both subsequent deliveries but, I apparently didn't develop PE in pregnancy/PP period #2 & #3.

Just wish my BP would regulate (I'm on 4 different meds now and it's still running high.

Lisa, Proud Mom to:
Stephen - 2003/04/23 - 39 wks - c/s with complications - PIH; PE PP
Andrew - 2006/04/04 - 37 wks - labor started, then c/s - BP went sky high but no PE
Katherine - 2008/09/06 - 38 weeks - water broke, then c/s - lots of BP issues but no PE
