| I'm 31 weeks and I was diagnosed with pre-e at 20 weeks (BP was elevated and 24hr urine protein showed elevated). At all my office visits I have always tested "normal" with the dip tests. About 3 weeks ago my doctor gave me strips to do daily dip tests. For the first 13 days it was always normal. Last week at the docs it showed "trace" and since then it has tested "trace" everyday at home as well. Has anyone else seen this? I've had to change doctors (mine relocated) and he doesn't seem concerned. I assumed this meant that my protein levels were increasing, but he seems to think this is normal? |

I don't have any experience with the at home strips, but I have read posts on here about them, and people don't seem to think that they are that accurate, that lots can affect them. That being said, if you have been diagnosed with pre-e your OB should be concerned with everything. Did your diagnosis include a bp reading of 150/90 or higher and 300 reading or higher on your 24 hour urine. Are you being seen weekly or twice weekly. Do you know the signs and symptoms to look out for - they are on the home page. Take care.

I was diagnosed with PE at 29 weeks. When you have chronic high blood pressure like I do it is hard for the dr. to tell when PE is setting in. I too had normal protien in the dip tests at the dr's office. It was not until they made me do another 24 hour urine test last Wednesday that they detected elevated protein (471) as opposed to the test I took 3 months ago (130). I went to the dr. yesterday and he said there was a trace of protein from the dip test. So I am thinking too that these dip tests are not very accurate and when they really want to see what is up they will do a 24 hour urine catch, which has always been accompanied for me by a blood draw to check for creatne clearance. Once you have PE, I don't think it really goes away until the baby is born.

In my personal expderience, A +2/3 on the urine strips usually indicates around a 300+ level protein.
Ditto Joy- I would request a 24 hour urine as soon as possible. The signs and symptoms can be found here: http://www.preeclampsia.org/symptoms.asp

Just wanted to echo the suggestion to request a 24 hour urine - that's the best way to get an accurate picture of what is going on with your kidenys. The dip-sticks can be inaccurate depending upon the concentration of your urine.
Let us know how it goes.

| I've actually had two 24hr urine tests already and I'm doing another one this weekend. I was just wondering what other people's experiences were with the dip tests. Mine have been normal even though my 24hr tests revealed elevated levels (390-400). This is the first time they shown trace so I'm interested to see if the 24 hr test will show an increase too . . . |

My last 24 hour urine showed 189mg but my dip sticks have always shown negative, with the exception of once. If you're very well hydrated, the dipsticks will tend to look better than they might actually be.
