writing letters to big companies

There are a few large companies in my area (two big casinos, Pfizer, Electric Boat, etc) and some smaller ones that I would like to send a letter asking for monetary donations or donations of services (printing, etc.). I was wondering if anyone has any formal letter example I may be able to use or any tips. I am a pretty decent writer, but it is easier to write to family/friends then it is to a big company.

Any help would be great.

If they are large, national or international companies, it would be better to have those requests originate from our Development committee (which, if you are eager to join, just let us know). If you have personal contacts you could make a phone call to get the ball rolling and then let us know to whom the letter should go. If the companies are locally based (e.g., the local casinos), then feel free to write up a draft, have us review it and get it onto PF letterhead. You can then handle follow up, etc. You can even initiate it with a phone call to their community relations director, asking for the protocal for charity sponsorship. They'll be keen to see some kind of local impact, so the challenge is creating a local program (the brochure campaign, for instance) that can be impacted by their giving. If your efforts are successful, YOUR letter can be the template for others. You should connect with Carol Hamilton who is working with groups across the country on their local programs and ideas.

I don't have a problem with writing to the local businesses, but I was lookiing for any assistance on a letter that might give me a starting point. I assume Carol is a member here?

Kris- Carol is the National Group Coordinator. Her screen name is CarolH and she is in contact with each of the State Coordinators. This is a great topic for discussion at our meeting in a couple of weeks. I think I have a good understanding of what Eleni is trying to offer.
