This idea may not be for everyone, but it worked for my family.
Yesterday, we celebrated my daughter's 5th birthday[:)]. We went big and sent out 35 invitations!! On the invitations, I wrote "in liue of presents, please consider donating to the Preeclampsia Foundation at preeclampsia.org, or to your favorite children's charity."
Let me make clear that my child is in want of nothing. If she had received 35 presents, I don't know where we would have put them. I knew that some guests would still bring presents, and here is another nice part. The presents that did arrive were scaled down.
Now, I know that etiquette purists would frown on this, but a number of parents approached me and let me know that they donated and they felt good about it. One couple talked at length about how after two pregnancies, one in the bouncer and one sleeping in the carrier, they had never heard of PE!
And what about Claire? She got the princess play carriage her heart yearned for and the Preeclampsia Foundation is a wee bit stronger to fight the disease she is potentially in line for. [;)]
