I think the automated option would be the best way. Helps to weed out most spammers.
If spamming becomes more common then the second option would be ok.

I think the automated version is better. Laura- you really don't need anymore work! :o) I know you do just a TON of things for this website and really shouldn't have to add it to the list. Another thought I had was when they put in their request for membership they would be a comment box/question box for them to ask a pressing question- i.e. "i think i may have PE and am worried, etc" those emails could be forwarded to the moderator of the section they would have posted at, kwim? just a thought.

I like the idea of hte automated option. I also am one who likes to immediately post if I join somewhere. I think if we maybe add just the automated validation would possibly make some newbies more comfortable about posting. Like Jocelyn said, it's worth a shot.[:D]
