Revision to Terms of Service and User Agreement

Postby laura » Wed Oct 13, 2004 10:34 am

It has recently come to my attention that since our board is evolving from a communion of souls and meeting of the minds into a bona fide message board, a revision to the User Agreement is in order.

The new, Number One Rule of our Forum that supercedes all others is:
Play Nice

What does this mean? This means that our boards are for the emotional support of women who have or have had preeclampsia. The only way that this can be an emotionally safe place for people to do that is if we all observe some basic boundaries of respectful behavior. This means that if you can't find a way to express your opinion without being rude, sarcastic, insulting, or demeaning, it is probably time to take a break, reframe, and rephrase. If you still can't do that, we will help you. A moderator will lock the offending thread with a post that says "This thread has been locked because of a potential User Agreement violation" and they will contact me. We will then either delete the post or offer you a chance to edit it, because we know that you didn't really mean to be rude, did you? Repeat violations will result in your username to be "locked" away from use for a specific period of time. Serial violators of the user agreement run the risk of being locked permanently.

This expectation of respect extends to the Staff of the Preeclampsia Foundation and the Forum Staff as well. If you have a problem with the Preeclampsia Foundation Policy or Forum Policy, it is usually considered good form to email those complaints or concerns directly to the person involved. Email us privately with your concerns about areas we could improve in. This policy works both ways to everyone's benefit. Please don't think that we don't want to hear your concerns, we just would rather see them in our inbox than on the boards. We're not censoring the message, we're adjusting the medium.

Recently some concerns have been raised about control and censorship. This is a private, member-only forum and by agreeing to use it, you are agreeing to follow the rules we have in place which are fairly standard throughout the forum world. Use of these forums constitutes acceptance of our User Agreement in its entirety. If you fundamentally cannot accept these rules, we wish you good luck and Godspeed finding an online community that better serves your needs.

Along this same vein about appropriate posting behavior, it is probably a good time to brush up on list of negative message board behaviors that are not welcome on our board.

Brinking: driving the administrators nuts by operating on the verge of forum policy and fighting about the gray area that exists in all policy matters- trying to see how far you can go without getting thrown off.

Trolling: people who post for the sole intention of causing distress or discord; if you're registering solely to exclaim that we're wrong about something, it can be construed as trolling. Please don't feed the trolls it just keeps them coming back!

Flaming: fruitless angry interchanges that elevate healthy debate into a street fight. It is considered flaming to insult, harass, or defame a member of our community. Please remember that we don't ever attack people, we debate ideas.

Spamming: advertising, linking to, or arguing for a product, pyramid scheme, or other plan from which you will personally benefit.
