12 weeks, +2 protien in urine, Bp elevated

Postby 2ndtimemom » Tue Nov 11, 2003 09:36 am

Hi I am new here! I am so glad I found this site because I feel alone alot of times. I deliverd my son at 37 weeks because of pre e. I am now 12 weeks prego again and my nightmere is happening all over again only much earlier this time. Last time the symptoms started at 27 weeks. Well now I am already spilling protien (+2) and my bp is elevated 144/89. Last week I was at the Dr twice becuse of blurred vision and headaches. I get to see a specialist on thurs but it seems so far away. I am really scared. Has anyone has this happen this early and what happend? I know they will probly put me on meds but will that be enough? Do you think I will need bedrest? Any answers would help me feel better [:)] Thanks in advance!

Lisa,

I'm so sorry you have to go through all this again and so early.

What kind of specialist are you seeing? A nephrologist or a high risk Ob (perinatologist)? You need to ask to be referred and have both these types of specialists see you and work through your pregnancy together.

As far as I know, and I am not a doctor, nurse or any other medical professional, at 12 weeks this is not preeclampsia. Preeclampsia is a disease of the placenta and the placenta is not developed enough at this time to cause the disease. This might be a good sign, because its possible that by controlling the BP, you might control the kidney disease. However, a +2 protein in urine might mean that there is a kidney problem, and this poses you at a high risk for preeclampsia.

Now, on a more optimistic tone, you need to know that the dipsticks are not a really reliable indicator, they give both false positives and false negative values. The specialistr you will see will need to at least ask you to do a 24h protein in urine test.

I know I heard of someone that had +3 very early on and she had no problems, I remember. I'll look for the posts and will add the links in here. Please keep us updated with how you are doing.

Good luck to you and your little one!

Hey there! My goodness, I know exactly what you're feeling, and that's the same reason I ended up here, too, except my hypertension set in at the end of my second trimester.

Here's some news that might may you feel a bit better... when hypertension sets in that early in pregnancy, usually doctors won't think it is preeclampsia, but chronic essential hypertension. And the good news about chronic hypertension is that your chances of developing full blown preeclampsia are around 25%, and if they are able to get your blood pressure under control, your chances of having a healthy pregnancy are really, really good.

The protein, however, is very concerning. Have they ordered a 24 hour urine to find out exactly what it's running? Hopefully antihypertensive meds will help with that, too. Hang in there. I'll bet they'll be able to help you, and you'll end up delivering a nice healthy 8 lb-er on your due date [:D] At least we can keep our fingers crossed! Let us know how your appointment goes.

Thanks for your repiles. I am not sure what type of specialist it is. His mane is Dr Easterling. He was posted up on this site. Anyways they have already done the 24 hour test and it came back with elevated protien although I dont have the specific # becuase my Dr's voice sounded like blah, blah, blah after I heard the news. So I will know more on Thurs but it seems like an eternity.

Lisa,

Check these links

Christina got to 20w, but I think we have heard nothing from her since August. I wonder what happened with her. Anyone?

This is what an expert answered to my questions. This link contains some kidney tests that are indicated

Anyway, you are in good hands with the doctor you mentioned.

Laura,
[:D] And when you think that in February, i was telling doctors that the HBP I had came from a Pepsi I drank the day before...

I am 13 weeks with high bp too with trace amounts of protein. My OB explianed I had chronic hypertention because it was so early, but yesterday my cardiologist said it was PIH. I am not sure which is worse if either are.
About the protein. I am not sure why that is happening, but I occasionally spill even when I am not pg.
Good luck

I am 16 weeks pregnant and at my most recent dr appt, my bp was high (130/90) and there was some protein in my urine. Not sure of the amount. My doctor had me do a 24-hr urine collection and a chem-8 blood test. She doesn't think that it is pre-eclampsia since it is too early. Hopefully the tests will support her conclusion. I had severe p-e my first pregnancy and do not want to go through that again. Magnesium Sulfate is the worst drug and made me feel terrible. Thankfully my daughter was born perfectly healthy and only had to spend 9 days in the NICU (she was born at 34 weeks). I dread having to go on bedrest and am hoping for the best. thanks for the info and glad to know that others are going through the same thing.
