Okay - I'm just got to list my blood pressures and indicate whether they were laying down or sitting up an then I'll tell the rest of the story.

10:30 AM - 151/95 - sitting up
11:10 AM - 147/90 - sitting up
Sent to L&D
11:40 AM - 155/107 - laying flat on back
11:55 AM - 119/73 - laying on left side
12:10 PM - 139/88 - sitting up
12:25 PM - 162/95 - sitting up
12:40 PM - 165/100 - sitting up
12:55 PM - 159/95 - sitting up
1:10 PM - 169/99 - sitting up
1:25 PM - 171/94 - sitting up
1:40 PM - 134/78 - forced to lay down
1:55 PM - 135/79 - forced to lay down
2:10 PM - 148/87 - forced to lay down

Okay - so I get to my appointment 30 minutes early and they take me in. First - they lost my entire medical record. It's gone. They searched for it for 5 hours that I was there. Then they started taking my blood pressure and then sent me to L&D where they did a full blood panel and urine panel. The blood panel came out "better than last time" and the urine panel came out wiht absolutely no proteinuria.

The nurses and I had it out, finally. One was great, one was horrible and chewed me out for sitting up. The one that was great explained that if my numbers are low enough they can send me home... so that's why they have REQUIRED me to lay down at all the other visits and why I got forced to lay down for the last 3.

I am so upset about the nurses, but I don't know what else to think about this appointment.

Rachel,

OH MY GOODNESS, I can't understand why they sent you home.........

I am no doctor so, maybe there is something I'm missing but, I can't for the life of me understand why they're not inducing or at least keeping you at the hospital, you're 35 weeks right? I was on magnesium sulfate with blood pressures that high. When they checked your protein, was it a 24 hour catch?

I'm just so sorry that you have to battle with the nurses for the safety of you and your baby. Please, please keep us updated.

Why they 'force' you to lay down makes no sense to me, do they think you are laying down the WHOLE time while at home?!?! They should take this into consideration at your gestation! GOOD LUCK! Go back a thousand times if you have to!

I am not sure--but I think the theory behind taking the BP lying down is to see if bedrest will keep your BP down. There is a logic behind it. I wouldn't get really upset about it but be really clear--have a print out of the experts here who advise semi-prone BPs and request that it is noted in your chart that you requested a semi-prone BP and they took it with you lying down. Keep your tone and manner respectful and calm. Just reiterate what you need but stay calm. You want the professionalism you portray to come back to you. You do not want them to dismiss your concerns because they think you are "overreacting".

Hi everyone. My name is Jenny. I am 34+ weeks pregnant and dealing with a similar situation.AT one point the blood pressure they got for me at L.&D. was about 190/114. And they sent me back to my house. I asked the dr. to keep me, and he declined. He seemed to feel that there was no need, just to stay laying down. Now I get consistant readings when sitting of about 165-175-90 or so. And laying down about 145-159/78-90 or so. They are watching me through the non stress tests and check ups about every 2 or 3 days but the blood pressure and headaches and spots of light when I take a shower seem to go unoticed by them.I had my mom speak with a peri. about the lights and headaches and he said that if the protein in the 24 hr. collections had nopt went to 5000 yet, it was not brain swelling and was from the blood pressure. My last test was at like 1100 on the protein.I just wish they would let me have the c section instead of playing this waiting game. At this stage ,I feel the baby is better off out than in.The 20 minute trips to the hospital for tests and the walking and sitting up is getting to me and my head hurts almost non stop.I do not understand why they are sending me back wiuth those pressures.ALso they u/s'ed. and the fluid was 11, so that was like 2 weeks ago or so, and I feel they should be re doing the ultrasound to see if it is getting lower or affecting the baby as the 11 itself wasn't low but less than desired from what I have seen.Sorry if I am ranting.....

Jenny, you have the right to rant! I know what it's like just waiting and wishing the dr's would/could do something. It is awful.

If you are unclear about your doctors decisions, make them explain them to you. Ask why they aren't doing things and at what point they will. Have them give you a game plan. Something saying we're trying to get you to ____ weeks. If your protein reaches _____ level or your BP is ______, etc ________ will be our action. Sorry for all the blanks, but you get the idea. Perhaps print off the signs/symptoms list on the "about preeclampsia" section of the home page, check off the symptoms you are having and bring it with so they are completely aware.

Hang in there hun, I know it is stressful! Lastly, if you truly do not feel you are being cared for adequately, get another consult...it sounds like you might have already. And here is a post by Anne about how to get adequate care :

Hope that helps, Catherine
