Just tested positive and a couple of Q's

Postby bethany » Sun Dec 28, 2003 07:55 pm

Hi ladies,
I am new here and boy I wish I had found this board with my first pregnancy.

Okay this may be legnthy, but here goes,
with my last pregnancy, I started having high Bp very early on, like 14 weeks, I had terrible swelling despite a reduction of salt, and terrible headaches. Well later in my Pregnancy all this continued to get worse, swelling, headaches, bright spots in my vision, BP of 145/90. My doctor did NOT seem to care, though it was very rough for me. AT 38 weeks, I tested my BP while I was out at a store and it was 178/126 so I went to the hospital, where a different doctor decided to induce. She was VERy upset that my regular doctor seemed to care less about this. ANywho, I did have preeclampsia.

Now to my questions, After having preeclampsia with my first baby, am I more likely to have it with this pregnancy? I already have borderline high BP (runs in the family) that started to show after my son.
Also, the gap betwee prenancys is only 9 months, and I was overweight to begin with, and I have yet to lose some of the weight from my first PG, would that have any bearing on my second Pregnancy?

Also any advice you have about selecting a doctor, whether I should see an OB or just a family doc. I just want someone that knows what they are doing and knows the signs and will take them seriously.
Sorry if this is long, TIA for reading this far .:)

Hi Bethany,

Sorry you had such a rough time with your doc. You should definitely seek out a perinatologist. Here is a website that may list one near you www.nasshp.org

Take care

Bethany,

Also, it sounds like you may have had what specialists would characterize as chronic hypertension since it showed up before the 20 week norm (even though it sounds odd if your BP was normal before). I am not a doctor and so obviously cannot diagnose. I agree entirely with what Kim said...find a high risk specialist. You are more likely to get preeclampsia again if you had it in a previous pregnancy than if you did not have it. The chances of it recurring range anywhere from 20-60% from what I have read. The earlier the onset or more severe the case, the more likely it is to return it seems. BTW, if chronic hypertension does end up being your diagnosis, the chance of it developing into PE is 1 in 4. There are also some tests that can be ran to see if you have an underlying cause for the preeclampsia, though few are considered accurate when done while pg (apparently...I haven't had them done).

And, on a more personal note: I'm about 8 weeks pregnant with my second after having pregnancy induced hypertension and oligohydramnios with my first...and it is about 9 months later. How far along are you?

WELCOME!

Oh, and one thing I forgot:

While weight and nutrition is not beleived to cause PE, it is the only thing we have any control over! So yes and no! lol BTW, I didn't lose all my pg weight either.

I just tested 2 das ago, I start worrying early! I am about 4weeks and a couple days. I have been doing some searching, and I may have to drive an hour, but I definately want a specialist. I will be calling today! I am so excited!

Congrats!! I am glad you will be a specialist because there are medications that can help with your bp and possibly ward off the pe..especially if oyu do have chronic hypertension. I owuld also encourage you to get your chart from your last pregnancy as your doc didn't seem to do much for you, maybe a new one can see through the chart when all this really started for you. Goodluck and let us know how things are going[:)]
