I'm 1/2 Alaskan Native and 1/2 caucasian (my dad's a french speaking Cajun), my husband is just native- and there's a lot of preeclampsia in my mom's (native) side of the family, and the majority of them had native spouses as well.

I definitely think that all of our family's preeclampsia comes from the fact that our family has so many problems with hypertension/cardiovascular problems. It's also true that our ethnic group on the whole tends to have more and worse problems with heart issues than in the normal population.

I am caucasian - Eastern Europe/Balcans (Romania)

DH is caucasian - US - the England way

The idea came from hearing that one other woman that had severe early onset pree was hungarian and her hubby was American-chinese. I have this theory that maybe very different genes might cause this...

Hi,

I do not think race has anything to do with it. I'm
Latina and my husband the same. Nobody in our families
has ever suffered from PE.

I'll answer first! lol [:D] Oops, almost first.

I'm caucasion (same with dh) and never really considered my race as a factor so who knows. We have European ancestry as well.

Though PE runs in my family and so do heart conditions, etc.

We are both white, of European descent. I don't think that is a known risk factor.

My family is from England and maybe eastern Europe, with one American Indian thrown in.

DH's family is Polish.

Sharel

I should have added: I have a family history of high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, strokes, and kidney problems.

DH's family problems seem to be centered on cancer and gastrointestinal problems.

Question of the day re: race and ethnicity

Postby laura » Thu Jan 08, 2004 03:23 pm

Studies are finding that minority women are at increased chance of having a hypertensive disorder of pregnancy. Some observe that the same groups of people that tend to have cardiovascular/hypertension problems later in life also seem disproportionately burdened with PE.

Question: Do you think that your race and/or ethnicity or your partner's race/ethnicity factored into your development of a hypertensive disorder of pregnancy?
