Hi there,
Just wanted to give you some hope. I have had pcos for about 15 years. I am 41 years old. I had a baby in 93 , now hes 16. After I had him, I had trouble concieving, so i tried clomid 3 times. I was put on glucaphage when I was diagnosed. It didnt work for me. A yar and a half ago My family doctor put me on byetta to help so that I wouldnt become diabetic. Within one month I was pregnant. At age 40 it was hard to get used too, as i was not looking to get pregnant anymore. But anyway, I have a wonderful 9 month old baby boy! Byetta really worked for me, I just started taking it again,(my husband has since had a vasectomy) it helps my cycle and I am regular and the good news is it does help me lose weight too. quote:Originally posted by Emily Kates Mom

Has anyone here heard of or tried the Byetta injections? I think it is a medicine for diabetes, but I have heard of women who have PCOS using it too. My doctor may be giving me this to try, and it could make a big difference in the "insulin resistance" thay goes along with my PCOS; which could help me lose this lovely excess weight I have been carrying around for 5 yrs. ( + 135 lbs in 5 years -- YIKES!!) If I could just lose this very stubborn weight, I think I would have much less of a chance of getting PE again. I want to get pregnant so badly, but I think it would be way too risky until I can solve this PCOS problem.

Thank you!

I have PCOS and have thought abuot this too. A friend of mine at work is taking it right now. She has PCOS and wants to try for a second baby, but wants to get better control of her health and her weight first. She said she feels pretty nauseated at times from the medicine, but that she has lost 30 pounds so far and she does feel much better overall. She sees an endocrinologist who specializes in PCOS. Good luck!

Thank you for all of your replies. I am interested in the Byetta because Metformin, diet & exercise alone are not doing the trick. I even tried a "nationally advertised" diet and gained 12 lbs.!! Yikes!
I feel like the PCOS is what has caused me to gain so much weight, so if I can at least control that, then maybe I will be in better shape when we TTC later on, and HOPEFULLY have a more healthy pregnancy next time around.

All of this infrmation is great. Thank you!

I have PCOS and we are ttc#2 and I am on Clomid 50mg, this is my 2nd cylce. I was on Clomid in late Dec.'04 and I got pregnant with the 1st try! I saw my OBGYN earlier of this month and he told me that if I didn't get pregnant with the 2nd and 3rd cycle of Clomid he would refer me to a fertility specialist and that they might try doing Clomid and Metformin together. The reason he is not doing that himself is because when he did the blood work on me for my insulin levels I was NOT insulin resistant. Some women with PCOS are insulin resistant but not all.
I too am trying to loose some weight but I think it is a lot harder for us women who have PCOS. It's not an excuse or anything but it is the truth!! I try eating pretty good and I am suppose to be getting my mountain bike soon so that will be good!!

Best of luck to you!

Byetta is a medication for diabetes. It works by enhancing insulin secretion from the pancrease, supressing elevated glucagon secretion (glucagon is a hormone that works opposite of insulin), delays stomach emptying, suppresses appetite, increases the mass of B-cells, and helps to preserve their function. (B-cells are the pancreatic cells that secrete insulin). I am not familiar of its use in PCOS patients. Where I work, Metformin is used in many PCOS women who are trying to get pregnant. I would assume that the theory behind using Byetta is similar to that with Metformin, only it accomplishes its goal by a slightly different mechanism. As far as Metformine, some women with PCOS can get pregnant with it alone, while others require additional fertility treatments. I don't think that PCOS in itself causes risky pregnancies. Hwever, excess weight, and diabetes (or insulin resistance) both asociated with PCOS can cause problems. It seems to me that the biggest pregnancy problem from PCOS is fertility issues. A quick hint...you'd be surprised what a little diet and exercise can do. Lifestyle changes (diet/exercise) are the single best thing to do for pre-diabetes..but possibly the hardest. It is so much easier to pop pills than to commit to a healthy diet and daily exercise. It doesn't have to be dramatic, ultra-intense exercise, either. Start slow and progress. Although fertility doesn't seem to be your problem, I can say that for many people, losing as much as 10-20lbs makes a big difference in being able to conceive. I wish you the best with everything, PCOS, PE, etc.

I'm not familiar with byetta... but do know of a few close friend with PCOS who were put on Glucaphage (metformin) which is a diabetic med. It alone helped one mom, and in combo with clomid has helped 2 others I know.
good luck.
