I am in the same boat as you. Had PP PE 2 years ago now. Hoping to stay PE free this time. Good luck to you. I see my doc in 2 weeks from tomorrow. Let me know what yours has to say.

Welcome! ( & congrats! )

The others have all given wonderful advice. Id connect with a MFM/peri ASAP. See what the recommedations may be, and go from there.

In my case, reoccurance was later on, and less severe. Not sure how it works after-birth though.

Thank you for all the additional feedback. I am really amazed and touched by the courage of so many women who go through pregnancies despite knowing the possible risks.

I am glad I found this group, I have an appointment today with MFM lets see how it goes!

Welcome to the most nerve-racking 9 months around! I wish you a happy, healthy and long, pregnancy. I developed PE after delivery and was on magnesium sulphate and was in the hospital for 6 days. I was left with a beautiful baby (now 5) boy and chronic high blood pressure. My second pregnancy was just fine except my BP went up and up, along with the BP meds. I am pregnant with #3 right now and have reached 27 weeks. My BP has been going up but we are controlling it with the meds. All this to say that, the first thing to do is find a peri or MFM Dr to follow you closely. I've seen my peri a lot more then the OB. My risk factors are very similar to yours - PE PP, chronic hypertension and I'll be 40 at delivery. My peri told me my risk of developing PE is 30%.

Good luck.

Just to add to what was already said, you could also have an underlying genetic factor that could contribute to your developing PE. Some of these factors (such as a hidden blood-clotting issue) can be tested for and successfully treated during pregnancy. So to go along with what Caryn and newengland10 said, a MFM doctor or perinatologist will know which disorders to test you for.

Finally, just to give you a bit of hope, I had high blood pressure in my first pregnancy and severe PE in my second, which became much worse after delivery (I was in the hospital for 10 days). I am now two weeks away from having my third child, am considered "term" and have not developed any PE signs so far, except for some fluctuating bps. Good luck to you!

Hi - I would ensure you connect with a Peri/MFM doc as soon as possible, should you continue further. Having a high risk doc in your corner is essential (IMO) for future pregnancies anytime where PE affected you during a pregnancy or after. PE reccurance is like standing at the craps table, some get it again some do not, and you just cannot predict. But with the three factors, there is a greater possibility of getting it again. And the best way to address that is with a plan in place for pregnancy management should complications arise.

Simran, welcome to the forums. I'm glad you've found us.

Our Experts (researchers and clinicians specializing in hypertensive pregnancy) have said that the odds of recurrent PE if you had postpartum PE in the previous pregnancy are less than 20% and possibly lower. Chronic hypertensives have a 25% chance of what they call "superimposed" PE and are often watched closely and sometimes given bp meds that are safe for the baby.

Here are some links to comments from our Experts:

Here's a link to find a maternal-fetal medicine specialist in your area: http://www.smfm.org

These subsequent pregnancies are nailbiters; you'll have lots of company on the forum. Please keep us posted.

Good luck to you with the new pregancy. I think a lot of women have second pregancies that are pre-e free but some do not and there is really no way of prediciting that I know about. Even though you have some risk factors you could have a problem free pregnancy there is no way of knowing for certain. I think the earlier pre-e occurs in a pregnancy the greater the chance of reocurrance. I am not sure about the stats for postpartum pre-e. I am sure someone will come along soon with a link to help.

Preeclampsia reoccurrence and guidance needed?

Postby simranlaks_2005 » Tue Jun 17, 2008 11:33 am

Hi All,

I am 43 years old and had preeclampsia post delivery (I had a son last year). I had high BP and my liver panel results were abnormal, I was given magnesium sulphate to avoid seizures from happening, basically i was in the hospital for 3 additional days.

Recently I had high bp issue which I am not sure is a result of preeclampsia post-delivery. Now I am pregnant again (unplanned one). I am worried about preeclampsia reoccurring again. I feel 3 factors are against me, my age, recent hypertension problem and of course preeclampsia in my first pregnancy. I am so scared that I am not even sure whether I should continue with my pregnancy or not as I have a 1 year old to take care of too.

Any thoughts on likelihood of Preeclampsis re-occurring in second pregnancy? Any feedback will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Simran
