I just got back from the doctor and he told me that I am fine and there is nothing to worry about. He did put me on bed rest for precaution. He is 100% sure that it is my gallbladder that is giving me problems. Thank you for your help!

That sounds exactly like my HELLP pain and my doctor also thought at first it might be my gall bladder. My enzymes were only slightly elevated when I was first admitted to the hospital (and this was after 3 weeks of the pains and almost 6 or 7 hours straight before I even went in to the hospital)...and 6 hours later they were pretty crazy. So definitely ask for more tests if you are still having pain and high bp. (My bp was never even high.)

The liver function tests are part of blood work. The tests above look like urine tests but I cannot be for sure just from the acronyms, however if you are concerned I would absolutely ask and if you have any pain again I'd head on in for testing...better to be safe.

Thank you for the replies. I'm not sure what they tested for. All I know is they did the 24-hour urine test and blood work. Is the liver function test part of the blood work? I guess I will wait until Friday to find out. Here is what is on the lab work paper if anyone happens to know: UTCRC, UTPRO, CMET, URIC.

Hmm. That must be really frightening. I did have a tiny bit of the liver pain towards the end (right before I gave birth), and it did feel A LOT like when I would have gall bladder attacks, before I had it out.

Hoping the liver tests straighten everything out.

Jessa asked the exact question I had--did they check your liver function and platelets? A huge number of HELLP cases (mine included) are initially diagnosed as gallbladder issues. That's not to say you can't have gallbladder problems in pregnancy--just that you need to make sure liver problems are ruled out. Better safe than sorry, and with protein in your urine, a headache and BP beginning to elevate, vigilance is certainly warranted.

Please let us know how you're doing, and what you find out.

HI Linda,
I am sorry to hear you are experiencing these symptoms. I can understand why you are concerned. Have you had a liver function test? My docs also thought I was experiencing Gall bladder problems. One even read an ultrasound and said I had thickened walls and that was the problem. They would have sent me home except my liver function test was abnormal and this got them all thinking about and watching for HELLP. In the end, another radiologist read the same ultrasound and said that there was no indication of gall bladder issues. Are you having any shoulder pain? That can also indicate liver problems. It really sounds like you may want to go to the hospital if the pain continues and the blood pressure is still up, just to be safe. They will do the liver function test then too and you will feel better. You probably already know from reading the forum, but HELLP is very frequently misdiangnosed as gall bladder disease. I know some of my docs still thought it could be gall bladder right up until the day the MRI showed my liver was infarcted. I really don't mean to sound so alarming, but I would air on the side of caution and go to the hospital or at least see your doc first thing in the morning. Please keep us posted on what happens.

Gall Stones/Pre-e

Postby linda0110 » Wed Dec 02, 2009 10:54 pm

I have a few questions about preeclampsia that hopefully someone can help me with. About a month ago, I had severe pain around the upper part of my stomach that radiated front to back, mostly on the right side. I could not lay on that side or I would have trouble breathing. I didn't go to the ER but my doctor did send me for an ultrasound which came back as gallbladder sludge according to one call, and gall stones according to the next call. I haven't had any episodes since then.

I am seeing a specialist because I am over 35 and I have had elevated blood pressure (140/80) w/headaches the last couple times I have seen him. He sent me for a 24-hour urine test and blood work. I have the results and the urine test is 321. I have an appt with my regular doctor to go over the results on Friday. I am just concerned about these results plus the issue above. It just sounds so close to some of the symptoms of HELLP, but the nurse told me she was positive it was gall stones. Are my numbers mild and should I not be too concerned at this point? I am 25 weeks along.
