Sometimes they don't verbalize that a child is IUGR, but you might find it in hospital records. Or it may be noted as "SGA"- small formgestational age. It doesn't necessarily mean anything if growth and development after birth are
ok (even if below the charts).
It can complicate life for those born severely premature. They might also use growth in part to determine when to deliver. For most of us with first pregnancies, we aren't having growth ultrasounds, so it's not often caught until other problems occur.

Re : Size of 30 weeker?
They did say she was a week behind...that she was the size of a 29 weeker...she was born at 30+3 so I guess that does make sense :)
Re : Size of 30 weeker?
Laura,
Avery was 2lbs 7.5 ounces And 15" at 31 weeks and they've said she was about the
size of a 29 weeker, which made her severe growth restricted ~2%tile. Thy said she should have been high 3- 4lbs at that gestation. Cara may have been a week behind. It's amazing how much a week can make a difference in percentiles. And as the others have said, weight alone doesn't define growth restriction. Head circumference, abdominal circumference can be a factor.

Re : Size of 30 weeker?
I think what I am understanding from all of this is that IUGR does not just solely depend on size. They take into factor how bad the placenta was. I know mine was not in good shape and my amniotic fluid was very low.
Re : Size of 30 weeker?
Thanks for posting that article, Jamie.
Both my babies were right at the 10th percentile at their lowest weights, and IUGR was never mentioned (and their ultrasound weights were estimated at 20% more than their actual birth weights, 4 years apart and different techs!). They both started gaining like crazy once they were home and had unlimited access to the boob, and both were above the 75th percentile for weight at 6 months, then plateaued and settled in at the 25th percentile.
Coincidentally, I was only 4.25 pounds at 37.5 weeks, for no real reason other than my mom had small babies (my brother was 5.25lbs. at 38.5 weeks).

Re : Size of 30 weeker?
Just to pipe in here - my twins were born at 29 weeks 2 days and were 2 lbs 2 oz and 2 lbs 4 oz and no one ever said anything about IUGR. If your 30 weeker is 2 lbs 11 oz that seems fine to me. Please remember that ultrasound weights are notoriously off.

Thank you for the article! I will check that out! Maybe it's because my placenta was not in good shape? I think you hit the nail on the head when saying that there is not enough criteria for us to really understand! Grrr
