I asked my doc about taking the beta this time & he said no unless there were an indication that early delivery was emminent. Also, they will only give the shots up to 34 weeks. After that, babe is on it's own.

I got the steroid shots at 24 weeks because my water broke prematurely but I didn't deliver until 31 weeks 5 days (because I developed preeclampsia and hellp).

Quick question about betamethosone and PE:

If you have a second pregnancy, would they just shoot you up with the beta anyway? Just wondering.

24 weeks is usually when they will start and thats across the board from every OB I have talked to in different states as well. I was only a few days before my 24 mark when I got my 1st of the Shots and thats because we knew I would most likely deliver in the next couple weeks. If they think that you could end up going in the next couple weeks then they would start the shots.
My friend is actually in the hospital right now at about 21 weeks and she was told if she makes it to 24 weeks then they will start the steroid shots as well.
Best of luck to you and your current pregnancy.

I got the shots at 24 weeks gestation and then delivered just a couple days later. Hopefully you don't!

Betamethosone is safe to take at 24 weeks' gestation and on for lung development. Indications for the shot include pregnant women who may go into preterm labor. I hope you hand in there a while longer!

Steroid shots

Postby jshell4871 » Tue Aug 03, 2010 12:57 am

I am 24 weeks today. I have chronic hypertension and have had PE in 2 of my 7 previous pregnancies. #6 I was hospitalized and given the shots at 28 weeks developed eclampsia at 29 and delivered immediately. Wondering at what gestation they if needed will give the shots? Also wondering if there is set criteria for when they sould be given? My bps have been getting really high at times over the last 2 weeks and DH and I are starting to get worried I won't make it much further. I have been to L&D once where bp was fine but I did have a +1. Waiting now for call back from my Dr.
