I honestly think it is different for all women...again another nomaly in the realm of PE. Some members here have had PE first time, even a loss and never had it second time. I had PE/HELLP at 26 weeks then 15 yrs later PE at 32.

I have read here that the general thought is "later and less severe" in subsequent pregnancies. However, I am not fitting that mold. I am getting it earlier and worse in my 2nd pregnancy.

My doctors told me that if I get it then most likely around the same time.

My OB recommended I not have any more pregnancies after delivering this Summer and one of the reasons she gave was that I could deliver even earlier the next time (which is scary indeed given I had to deliver at 24 wks.); however, my MFM specialist said that was possible but I would be more likely to develop it later in the pregnancy.

Terri,

I wanted to give you an answer on the Preeclampsia Foundations list of frequently asked questions that may help you regarding your risk of getting PE in your next pregnancy--

-If I had preeclampsia in my first or an earlier pregnancy…

There has not been significant research looking at the rate of reoccurrence in subsequent pregnancies, however the consensus among experts is that preeclampsia in a previous pregnancy is the single largest risk factor for developing preeclampsia. It is entirely wrong to say that if you had it in your first--you will not get it again. The risk of having it again is approximately 20%, however experts cite a range from 5-80% depending on when you had it in a prior pregnancy and how severely you had it.

The risk increases if since your previous pregnancy you have developed chronic hypertension, diabetes, or if you are having IVF, twins or other multiples, as well as the risk factors mentioned above

Hi Terri,

You are at a higher risk of developing pre-eclampsia in subsequent pregnancies if you had developed it before but there are a lot of women who go on to have healthy pregnancies after having it. There are no studies that I am aware of that say you will get it earlier in subsequent pregnancies if you do get it. It could come earlier, around the same time, later, or even after delivering. Or, you may not get it at all. The best thing to do would be to have a pre-conception consultation with a high-risk OB and discuss the risks. There are other factors that can increase your risk as well (such as chronic hypertension & obesity), so they could assess those for you and you could possibly make changes before conceiving again. One thing I can tell you is that since you developed your PE late in your previous pregnancy, you are at a lower risk of redeveloping it than someone who developed it earlier.

Best wishes!

preeclampsia occuring earlier in next pregnancy

Postby terri6287 » Fri Sep 24, 2010 02:15 pm

I was wondering if you have preeclampsia earlier with each addition pregnancy after your first. With my son who is 16 months I started to get high blood pressure and pass protein at about 37 weeks. They let me got 2 addition weeks until it go to the point were they induced. I am not pregnant with my second child and was wondering if once you have preeclamsia you get it with every pregnancy after, and if it comes earlier with each additional pregnancy. Any input would be much appreciated! Thanks!
