Sick :/ need help and advice

Postby Asrj02 » Sun Apr 07, 2013 05:51 pm

I am a 22 year old female and 15 weeks pregnant. Since I was about 10 weeks, I would get these dizzy spells, nasuea, panicky feelings, hot and out of breath upon standing...It was mild then but over the last week its been progressively worse..my bp would spike...one time got as high as 169/105! This is upon standing...I also get tachycardic when I stand. My bp laying will be 110/65, sitting 122/75, standing usually 130/90 to 145/100. My heart rate laying will be 75-80 BPM and once i stand it will be 95-120 bpm! When I get out of the shower, my heart beats like 140 BPM. Again, once I lay down these issues are resolved 100%. Ive seen four doctors this week as it has gotten worse. Sunday was when i got that 169/105 reading at the grocery store and blurred vision so I headed over to the ER. Got there, did an ekg, blood work and checked for Preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome. Everything absolutely fine cause of course once I lay im fine and all tests were good. Doc told me it was anxiety and told me to follow up with my OB. Tuesday I saw my OB and again my bp was 150/105. She freaked and gave me a referral to go down stairs to the ER. Well once I got to the ER, it started dropping a little to 140/90 and again i had an ekg, blood test, etc. Laying down it dropped every half hour lower and lower to 118/65 at the lowest. Doc again sent me home with an anxiety diagnosis. I started getting more suspicious, cause I know the difference between anxiety and something being not right. I made an appointment to see my regular MD in hopes of getting some kind of treatment. Well the MD told me she doesnt see anything wrong. ugh, im so frusturated! I have gotten sicker and sicker these last two days and I cant stop crying because what I feel is very real. ive done my research and im thinking i could possibly had POTS or orthostatic hypertension..IDK, thats why Im here...docs wont help me and i feel horrible. I want to be able to do regular things again.. Does anyone see a coorelation here to how they developed pree? all opinions welcomed. Thanks..

I am so sorry you are feeling so lousy and that your doctors seem a bit at a loss. This is absolutely frustrating and not at all reassuring. All your symptoms you are describing can be attributed to anxiety, however, if you feel and know that there is something else going on, please trust your gut feeling. I think that your BP readings are on the higher side and should be monitored perhaps and if needed you might need some BP medication. Your OB is still your best go-to person and if it does not get any better, you might want to ask about seeing an MFM (maternal fetal medicine specialist), which is a high-risk OB who only deals with pregnancy complications. Preeclampsia usually does not get diagnosed before 20 weeks, but one can develop high-blood pressure early in pregnancy, even if it is normal outside of pregnancy. Often with medication it can be controlled quite well.

How are you doing this week?

Maybe pregnancy is unmasking a tendency towards hypertension? With your history plus some now some high pressure readings you could always ask for a referral to a MFM specializing in high risk pregnancies.

I'm not a doctor, but if I had your symptoms, I would want some blood drawn to check on my thyroid and adrenal glands. (Assuming they didn't already check your thyroid and cortisol levels when they ran bloodwork at the ER).

I know someone with suspected POTS, she is very sensitive to changes in blood sugar levels. She basically had to cut out all sugar and caffeine since they exacerbated her symptoms. An internist coordinates her care. As far as I know POTS alone is not linked to preeclampsia. But some POTS patients may have additional autoimmune disorders that can be pregnancy risk factors.

Hi ladies and thank you for your replies! I got out of the hospital Friday after being there three days and am finally feeling some relief! I'm on labetalol twice a day which is helping my bp and symptoms. Doctors still can't find a reason or diagnosis. I had extensive blood work done, us of the heart and several ekgs. I highly suspect that I could just have a subset of pots. My body is trying to sort itself out from all the craziness pregnancy is doing to it. Hopefully it will sort it self out over the next couple of weeks if not maybe after birth. I am just taking it easy for now and staying away from stress.. All I can do right? My thyroid test came back slightly hyper but not enough to warrant a dx. I'm gonna see my go this week to check my adrenals and made look for that crazy adrenal tumor that I can't spell at the moment. Thank you ladies for your support.. Can't wait to get baby boy out lol so I can feel even more better. Hugs, andrea

Glad to hear you are feeling better on labetalol. Interestingly enough, beta-blockers can be used to treat symptoms of POTS and hyperthyroidism.

Are they planning to re-check your thyroid levels at some point? For more on managing thyroid problems in pregnancy: http://www.preeclampsia.org/forum/viewt ... 20&t=44473

Please let us know how you get on.

Glad to hear you are still hanging in there.

Although it is always good to eat healthy, unfortunately there is no diet proven to prevent preeclampsia. If you want to know more about current pre-e research there are a lot of links to studies here:
www.preeclampsia.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=26469 (including a section on dietary/lifestyle factors)

Here is a link to an older discussion about the Brewer diet you might be interested in: http://www.preeclampsia.org/forum/viewt ... =12&t=9742

Hope this helps, good luck!
