New here! In hospital now with postpartum pre-eclampsia....

Postby Claireelizabet » Fri Jul 05, 2013 04:56 am

Hi all,

My name is Claire & I am a mom to 10- our youngest is Sunday and she is 1 week old (6/25). My delivery was a last minute hospital delivery. We planned a home birth but I started having a gallbladder attack during labor :-/ I've suffered with gallbladder disease this entire pregnancy. My GB is supposed to come out next week. Anyways, normal, natural birth with no medications or complications. Normal pregnancy.

I came to the ER on Monday with symptoms. I had been keeping track of my BP at home due to previous history of post partum hypertension. When I got here it was 217/119. My labs were normal but I did have swelling & a horrible headache & was seeing lights. They started me on magnesium sulfate for 24 hours. I came off of it yesterday morning. Yesterday evening I started seeing lights again. They took my BP & it was 167/104. They decided to put me back on last night. So here I am on the awful mag again. Additionally, due to my headache & gallbladder pain, I am also on norco, ibuprofen & stadol for pain. Unfortunately, my blood pressures have been running around 150-180/ 90-112 since I have been on the mag again. Before, while on mag, they were around 138-150/76-95.

So, I'm scared and concerned. Plus, this headache that I have barely goes away even with all of these pain meds.

That's me, Claire :-) I am looking for support & advice. I'm pretty scared. Ok, very scared. I am writing this from my bed while nursing my little one.

Hi Claire - Welcome to the forums and congrats on your little one. I am sorry that you had to find us here.
It sounds like the hospital is doing the right thing by giving you another round of mag. Usually one round is bad enough, but two sounds terrible. I am sure that someone with useful advice on dealing with PP hypertension will pop in soon. Hang in there, and I hope you are feeling better.

Teresa,

Thank you for replying.

Did you have post partum pre-eclampsia? Am I posting in the right forum?

Thank you,

Claire

Claire-

You're totally in the right place. So sorry you are dealing with complications. I am hopeful they will find the right combination to get your BP under control. I'm thankful you're being closely watched. Hope your newest addition is doing well.

They just took me off of my 2nd round of magnesium. I was on it for 24 hours.

I just had a reading of 172/119. I am scared. That reading was at 8:30 & they took me off of mag at 5:00pm.

The nurse just assured me that this is about finding the right combo of meds. They don't think that I will have a stroke. That made me feel better.

Now we just wait & see what the dr has to say.

I am so sorry you are experiencing postpartum PE. It is very scary. I had it with my second baby. After being diagnosed before birth, it got worse postpartum. My BP readings were are all over. It took a while to find the correct medication. Don't be surprised if your dosages and/or medications get changed often until something works. That can happen. Not fun at all and scary , I know. Hang in there. Glad you are in the hospital. Sending you hugs. How is the baby?

Hi there,

My baby is doing very well. I am so thankful that my mom is here. She is helping with the baby so that I can keep her with me to nurse her.

Yesterday we had a scare. My BP was 153/122. They immediately wheeled me down to labor & delivery for some special IV meds. Thankfully, when I arrived my numbers went down. They went down after they gave me IV pain meds for the horrible headache that I have.

My numbers have been up & down today but nothing scary like yesterday. They go down after the IV pain med. So crazy. I am hoping that maybe tomorrow they will send in a specialist (neurologist? maxi cranial specialist since I have 2 bad teeth that need pulling?) to help figure out what can be done about the headache. I can't be sent home on IV pain meds!

This has been a crazy journey. I am thankful that I am here. But also sad that this is happening. I desperately miss my kids, too.

Sometimes mom is best. I am glad she can be with you and help you through this difficult time. I remember that the first two weeks postpartum were the worst and then I started to get better and better. I hope you will be out of the woods soon. You will probably stay in the hospital until your BP is stable on medication that does not require IVs. Keeping my fingers crossed for a quick recovery. Must be hard to be away from your other children and husband.

Hi Claire! I'm following your post because I'm hoping to find some answers too. I had my DS on 6/30 at 37w after being on bed rest since 27w with pregnancy induced hypertension. I delivered naturally and was released with BPs in the 130s/80s and no meds on Tuesday. On Friday I was admitted with BP at 179/120. Was on mag for 23 hrs (I hate mag). They released me yesterday with labatalol 3 times a day. I still have a slight headache. It makes me nervous.

I have to go back today to the OB's office for a BP check. My frustration with that is I don't believe the nurses check BP accurately. During my pregnancy, a couple of the nurses had been reporting a read of 120/80 at each visit when my at home monitor was 140s/90s. I took my BP last night and at one point it was 161/105, I don't want to go back to the hospital again.

I hope they find your right combo (and mine) soon!
Robin

ETA: my OB increased my labatalol from 200 mg 3 times a day to 300 mg 3 times a day. The thing that made me comfortable is that she said that I had more room for adjustment.

Hope you are stabilized! Take care!

Freebsnest, I am so glad that I am not doing this alone. But I'm so sorry that you are dealing with it too :-(

I have 2 really bad cavities. The teeth cannot be saved. Whenever they load me up on pain meds, my blood pressure goes down. So, I will be having oral surgery in the morning around 8:00 am. They will be putting mule down under general anesthesia. Please send prayers. I am nervous but thankful.

I had some high readings tonight (172/111) & my nurses keep asking me to lay on my left side for 10 minutes. Then they come back to take them. It's frustrating! They are always lower the 2nd time. I'm bummed because I won't be laying on my left side all day at home. The high reading are always done when I am just sitting up in bed. I'm afraid that the drs will have false confidence if that makes any sense?

And ugh, I feel so out of it after starting my new pain med. It's called ultram. I've had the hiccups 4 times today, I feel so neauseas, am very lethargic, etc...

I will continue to update....
