MILITARY DOC DIAGNOSIS OR LACK THEREOF...

Postby KELLY_BOYD » Sun Jul 28, 2013 12:40 am

My wife is 27 and is 32 weeks pregnant. She is experiencing swelling and edema in her left foot and ankle and swelling only in her left hand. She also has severe headaches, constipation, pain in her right side rib area, heartburn (which i think could actually be epigastric pain) dizziness, trouble focusing her eyes (though rare), nausea and vomiting (vomiting is also rare though is still occuring from time to time, latest occurence was yesterday and it seems to be getting more and more common).

I believe that based on her symptoms, that she may have preeclampsia. The doctor that we are seeing, says that it is not, based soley on the swelling in her body being only on the left side. Is this a sound diagnosis? Is swelling always bilateral for preeclampsia?

I'm asking because we have a military doctor and have not been very happy with him and he seems very indifferent to her symptoms when we have our appointments. I'm wondering if anyone else has had a previous experience or has been diagnosed with preeclampsia while only having lateral swelling/edema?

I've never heard anything about swelling only being on one side. Not a sound way to create a diagnosis AT ALL. I think her constellation of symptoms are worrisome, and warrant at the very least ruling out pre-eclampsia. Has her blood pressure been taken or any urine dips at the office (pretty standard appt check)?

Here is the diagnostic criteria for pre-eclampsia:

Are you able to take her blood pressure today? Often drug stores have them...

Please keep posted... and since it's Sunday, and I'm sure hard to get a hold of your doctor, don't hesitate to do a check at the hospital to ease your concerns and give you clearer answers to what may be going on.

Onesided swelling sounds worrisome to me; I would want that double checked. PE is diagnosed bades on high BP (two readings of 140/90 measured 6 hrs apart) and protein in the urine (300mg or higher in a 24-hour urine catch). Do you have the possibility to change doctors if you don't feel comfortable in the care you receive?
