I am 41 years old and almost 23 weeks into my 4th pregnancy. I have never experienced pre e before so this is all very new to me. A week ago I went in for a routine visit and to my surprise doctor said I had protein in my urine and ordered my 24 hr urine test. I received my results yesterday and they came back at 957 , 37.7. The doctor (on call) said this is not for sure pre e and not to over stress about it. I explained I do get occassional headaches, shortness of breath, mild swelling in the morning , face included and his comment "you can't get pre e this early on." I'm scared and confused. My numbers seem high and in not sure if my symptoms are exaggerated because of my worry. My general prac called (after on call obgyn) and ordered further testing of kidneys, which I go in for first thing this morning. Are these numbers high , should I worry? These doctors are making me feel crazy and I personally feel I'm a ticking time bomb. I should mention my bp reading is normal for general standard but high for me.

If your blood pressure is normal, then right now it is technically not preeclampsia. (Criteria for preeclampsia diagnosis is 2 readings of 140/90 and 300 mg of protein or more in a 24 hour urine test.)

It is relatively rare for preeclampsia to develop before 24 weeks but it CAN and does happen. I was diagnosed at 23 wks and 2 days and had been having symptoms for a few weeks prior. We have someone here who had it at 18 weeks (which is extremely rare).

How is your swelling?

I think right now it is probably a good thing that they are looking into kidney issues and they should definitely keep a close eye on you. If you haven't been referred to a MFM (maternal fetal medicine specialist) I would request a referral, since they are the experts for high risk pregnancies.

900 mg is high enough to be considered preeclampsia with high blood pressures but protein levels can go up to the thousands and while not be great, be okay with close monitoring.

Thank you @angelab. I did go in today and your reply is absolutely correct. Pre e has been ruled out for now. Having a blood draw weekly and bp monitoring. BP is extremely low and swelling is minor upon waking and is non existent as the day progresses. I've had a headache all day without relief from Tylenol and headaches off and on for two weeks. It looks as though I will be set up with a kidney specialist soon. It's all so concerning and confusing but have the docs on top of it is all I can ask for right now. Again, thank you so much for your reply. This experience at the very least has made me realize the seriousness of pre e.
