So sad to see the same stuff happening over & over

Recently it seems like there have been so many posts from women saying their concerns are being "blown off" by the doctors and nurses they have to rely on.

It is giving me flashbacks! [:(!]

In April 2002, I had barely even HEARD of preeclampsia, but luckily I was blessed with an OB who had, and who knew that she wasn't qualified to treat severe pree in the 26th week.

So, she sent me to a specialist. And that specialist, d*** him [}:)], completely blew off my symptoms. I had a bp of 180/110 in his office, I was spilling protein, and I'd gained almost 10 lbs of fluid in one week. And he told me to return to work. [xx(]

I recall so clearly reassuring my husband over the next two days that he was the Expert and we shouldn't worry. But Thank God Kevin did worry, and he forced me to see another specialist.

That Dear Man [:X] recognized how sick I was and put me on bedrest in the hospital. FIVE DAYS LATER i had to be delivered...I had developed HELLP at 28 weeks. My liver and kidneys were messed up, my bp went to (at least) 215/135, and I got pulmonary edema.

What if I had been at work?? [:(]

**********

Okay, I just had to get that off my chest. It just hurts so bad to read about other women having the same issues and not getting the care that they need. Even if there really is no problem, they should be listened to and treated as human beings capable of understanding a serious problem and wanting the best possible care. It really isn't too much to ask.

I try not to think about the consequences of going with the first specialist's diagnosis. But when I hear of others that could be having the exact same problem, it just causes all of those feelings to re-surface.

Everyone, take care of yourself. And, be sure to demand the best possible care.

I truly believe that most medical professionals are willing and able to treat women with the respect and professionalism necessary. Unfortunately, there seems to be too many who do not.

Sharel (whew, sorry for the long vent! [:I])

I couldn't agree with you more, Sharel. I wish there was a more "standard of care" for pre-e. I think if the doctors saw more info on pre-e, maybe they would know. I wish we could get into a lot of ob journals, etc.. Here in Texas, I am currently making copies of the PE brochure and mailing them out to all of the ob's/hospitals. My poor doc will get an earful at my appointment on the 26th. I don't care if it costs me $1000, it will be worth it!!!
Take care,

I just had to echo your sentiments about the limited level of care and attentiveness on the part of some medical professionals. Although my OB has been very vigilant about watching my lab work weekly and my baby has been closely monitored for an arrhythmia, she tends to dismiss my rising BP's because they go down with rest. I have talked with her about the validity of sitting versus lying BP's, but she feels reassured that they do go down (indicating that my body can still down-regulate my BP with rest). While this is true, many experts feel that the sitting BP is the only one of significance for management of PIH. The office staff - nurses and medical assistants - also do not always take the BP accurately and seem to resent me correcting them despite the fact that I am a RN. I have taught my husband to take my BP, and he does it better than some of them! Our common concerns just underscore the fact that we need to be educated about PIH/pre-e and advocate for the best care possible for ourselves and our babies! Sometimes, the medical experts are not the experts....

We have a "About the Preeclampsia Foundation" brochure we can get you. We need to get an official distribution route--thinking of doing it in PDF and then women can download the brochure and distribute them as a chapter activity. We need to somehow though track the money it costs--so we can at least credit "in-kind" donations (like if one of the PF members donates the cost of printing either through their company or covering the costs). Any brainstorming around this would help. ALSO want to keep them nice looking and so don't want them copied cheaply. We are also ready to print up the "What is Preeclampsia?" (I want one that says, "Why Do I have to Pee in a Cup?" but some of my wiser volunteers think that might be too crude...) Any thoughts are welcome!

And Sharel--I know just how you feel. Very frustrating.

Anne,
Email me that "Pee in the cup" one as soon as you get it!! I go see my doc on the 26th and now their practice is specializing in high risk. Take care,
How was your trip?

Oh geez ... there's another one today ...

It is so painful and sad to see so many women getting bad advice over and over and over again!

In the words of Charlie Brown: I can't stand it! [:(!]

Well, I had to bump up this thread, because it is happening again.... WHY can't women get good, consistent medical advice? I hate so much to keep reading about peri's blowing off women's concerns. ugh [:(]
