concerned about weight gain

Just got back from my bi-weekly OB visit. Although my bp was a very good 120/80 and no protein, the doctor was concerned because over the last 6 weeks, I've been averaging a gain of 2 lbs a week that doesn't seem to be related to over indulgent eating. Although I don't show any outward signs of swelling, he's worried that I might be retaining water and a BP spike may follow. ( I swelled pretty badly with preg. #1). I know with PE, the swelling is usually sudden and significant, but I was wondering if any one else has experienced a weight gain trend like mine that preceded PE or PIH? (My weight gain has not been OBSCENE so far -19lbs. -, but I have a bit to go, and hope to stay on track.) My doctor recommends sodium restriction, LOTS of H2O and calcium for the water retention. Any other suggestions?

My pre pre-e weight gain was 5 lbs in one week. You could just be at the point of your pregnancy where you will naturally gain more weight, but I am glad that your OB is paying attention - it just means more care for you. Good luck.

With my last pregnancy I started swelling pretty darn early. I think by about 3 months my rings were no longer fitting. That said, I was diagnosed with PIH at 28/29 weeks and had had a large weight gain between that visit and the previous one and continued to gain after that.

This pregnancy I seem to have had no swelling so far which is slightly reassuring even though my BP is somewhat labile already.

I gained about 2 pounds a week for my entire 6th and 7th months, with a two-week period in there where I gained 3 pounds each week. But it slowed back down to about 1-1.5 pounds a week once I hit the eighth month. My OB and the nurse practicioner I see both thought that was a totally normal amount of weight to gain (particularly because during the period my appetite was also up, not to the point where I was eating tons, but I was eating more than I had before or after) and that the baby was probably doing a lot of growing. So, 2 lbs a week could very possibly just be normal for you right now.

Thanks everyone -- just hoping my little boy is having a growth spurt and this will slow down with no other indicators of PE[:)] !
