I had severe itching after the delivery of my daughter, but I thought it was a side effect of the mag. Now that you guys bring it up, I guess it's more likely it was from morphine or some other pain med. (This brings to mind that verse from an Alanis Morissette song about the morphine making me itch. :D ) Laura, for what it's worth, I don't recall any itching after I had my son. It was a different hospital and I had a combined epidural and spinal. I'm not sure if the pain meds used during surgery were different.

Did you speak with your MFM about steroids?

Hm...my guess is that the IV would probably be the same just gets there faster, but it's a good question.

Have you gotten an answer about if they'll do steroid shots for you or not yet, Laura?

Interesting! I had the same reaction to the epidural I itched to the point where I had sores on my face and neck. The benedryl made me loopy and so tired. I wonder if benedryl IV is different than pill form?

Toradol is SO amazing (it's non narcotic, its IV ibuprofen)....that after my IV came out, I asked for it IM (shot) until I went home. It works soooo good and doesn't make you loopy/tired/constipated like narcotic pain killers do. AMAZING stuff!
Angie, was it toradal? That's what I took with Oliver, and it was good stuff! ;)

they gave my friend benedryl with her epidural cuz shes allergic to pain meds. She lost her son Jacob at 34 weeks in utero to preeclampsia and had life threatening complications to the epidural with him soooooo they were guarding her like a hawk for this delivery. She lost him December 18th, and this year she delivered her daughter Mid january and they had the head hauncho do her epidural and stay with her I think for almost two hours. She was still pretty miserable with the itching, but they were giving her the benedryl. She'd take that over the pain any day :0) lol

Laura, I wasn't a candidate for VBAC, but based on what I've heard/read there is a higher rate of c-sections associated with induction. My guess is that is why your OB said 50% chance. FWIW, the physical recovery from my c-sections were not bad at all. Do you have adverse effects with Motrin? That is what I used for most of my pain management. I took it regularly every 6-8 hours the first week and only took the *good* pain meds a couple of times the first few days. Honestly, I might have been able to do with out the good stuff, but I took it at night time *just in case*. Since my son was in the NICU, I was up as soon as the epidural wore off enough for me to get in a wheel chair.

Can you let us know what your MFM says about the steroid shots? I didn't have them with my son. He was born at 35w6d due to low fluid and was in the NICU for just over 2 weeks because of immature lungs. I'm wondering if steroids might have helped. I'm currently pregnant again, 19 weeks, and I'm hoping my doctors will agree to steroids this time.

That was probably it! It started with a T. :) My uncle thought it should work without making me sick, and said that's what they are recommending to most people who were on darvocet due to percocet/vicodin issues.
