Welcome Gabriel!

Postby mllewellyn » Sun Jul 15, 2012 03:00 pm

Hi everyone! On Monday of last week (9th), I went in for OB appointment. I had an ultrasound first and then an NST. On Monday, I was 36 +1. When I saw my doctor, she said, "It's time. He's not growing anymore, there seems to be problems with the placenta, and your blood pressures are high." I felt like the bottom dropped out. I was expecting more bedrest. So, I was admitted on Monday. Since I was on lovenox (and not made the switch to heparin), I was put in a holding pattern until 8:00 PM (admitted at 10 AM). At 8, I was given dose #1 of cervidil. On Tuesday morning, I was not dilated at all so I was given dose #2. On Tuesday night, still not dilated so dose #3. On Wednesday morning, I was 2 cm dilated and not effaced. Pitocin was begun at this point. I labored fairly easy until my water (which was low) broke at 6 PM. At that point, things went south for the baby and the discussion about a c-section started. Baby Gabriel then got better and labor continued. However, I asked for an epidural when I was 8 cm and 100% effaced. The anesthesiologist refused since I had not had a CBC to count platelets. An hour and much pain later, I got the epidural. Over the rest of the night, I labored but because Gabriel was small (4.5 lbs on Monday), he would not engage the pelvis. Eventually he was in the birth canal and he went into distress. I was spirited away for an emergency c-section. Gabriel was born on 7/12/12 at 2:42 AM. My worries about his size and prematurity were high, but he was squalling when he came out. His apgars were pretty good (8-10). The NICU unit whisked him away and I was patched up. The next morning, he had trouble maintaining temperature so we were told he would stay in the NICU after I was discharged. However, he is doing well and although initially lost weight (not too much), he is gaining now. It is a slow process and he is still learning to suck and doing pretty good considering he was in the 5th percentile at birth. I was discharged this morning and FINALLY got colostrum this afternoon. I have been pumping about every 3 hours since Friday. I was out much of Thursday (birth day) due to pain meds in the epidural. But, when I woke in my room, there was a pump and lots of instructions. They also left a note to call the lactation specialist as soon as I was ready to begin. I have pumped before so I just started. The lactation nurses have come by every day to encourage me and to provide support. It has been so wonderful. The NICU staff has been amazing and very positive. My fears of the incision and c-section were unfounded. It hurt the next day, but nothing unmanageable. I am moving around a little more each day but still have soreness. All will be well soon. I want to wish all of you the best of luck with your pregnancies. May all of you have apositive and wonderful experience. Also, thank you all so much for your support and concern. This forum ha\s been a source of great support and kindness to me and I will never forget this. I will check in to see what others are posting.
