Another new prospective father

My name is Geraint and my partner Leanne is expecting twins (one of each) and is currently 25 weeks pregnant. It may be nothing to worry about but reading all the info about preeclampsia rather scares me. She has a history of low blood pressure when not pregnant and the pregnancy has raised her level to round about normal, but she has just started getting some of the symptoms described here such as swelling in the arms and legs and rapid weight gain. The midwife appointment is tomorrow and she will check her out then. She says she might have to stay in hospital. Has anyone else out there had twins and is this just the start of this condition?

Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

HI Geriant and welcome to the forum!! Congrats on the pregancy...I know how scary this all can be!! I do have to say that one of the things that can contribute to pre-e is carrying twins. I have a success story for you however. A co-worker of mine a few years back was pregnant with twin boys and she developed pre-e at 22 weeks. She had to stay in the hospital for 10 weeks and delivered at 32 weeks. Granted, it's not fun, her twins did do well and are very healthy 3 year olds now[:)] Goodluck and the appoinment tommorow and let us know how your wife is doing...

You're doing the best thing possible for your partner and babies - getting yourself educated and finding support! What a good Daddy your already are! Have you checked out the signs and sympotoms page? I'd print it out and have it around the house just as a reference!

Leanne just had her midwife appointment. BP is OK, more protein found in her urine and the swelling is still severe but they reckon it's not preeclampsia (yet, at least). Told to rest and stay off work. Babies are OK. Having another scan on 2 April and next midwife appointment is 6 April. Will keep an eye on the symptoms in case they get any worse and I'll let you all know how it goes. Thanks for the support.

Hmm, that's almost three weeks until her next appointment? This stuff can get worse rather quickly. Hmm, I wonder if she could go in once a week just to dip her urine, and check her blood pressure?

Thanks for all your kind thoughts. Her normal BP is low so the pregnancy has increased it to what most would consider to be normal. We have a home BP monitor to keep an eye on things. We have an appointment with a specialist on 2/4/04 as well so there's only two weeks until our next check up. I'll be sure to keep an eye on her until then. Let you know if anything changes.

Hi Geraint, You're so right! Tho, I think our radars went off because normally the blood pressure will drop during the second trimester below prepregnancy values, so when there's an increase, especially 30 systolic and 15 diastolic, it may not be cause for concern necessarily, but it's definitely cause for watching.

And some of us noticed the rapid weight gain right before we began to spill protein, so that, too. I'm glad they're watching her closely! Twins can be tricky.
