Wife in Hospital with Pre e

My wife was hospitalized last week for pre e. Has protein in urine high blood swelling and labs are off. Shes been there for a week and at 34 weeks on thursday anyone have any idea how long this will last. Her Bp goes up and down on a daily basis. One day they wanna send her home then its nope cant do it because bp is up. My mind is shot this is our first child and I just hope we get through this to see our new little girl. When do they decide to take the baby out?

Hi there and welcome to the forums. I am so sorry you and your wife are having to go through this. It's so scary and feels so wrong. After all this is suppose to be the happiest time. First of all, it's so awesome that your wife is almost at the 34 week mark. This is great and if your wife's edd is right on, 34 weeks is usually just fine to deliver. Ie. lungs are pretty developed. I know it's so hard to play this waiting game, but you guys are in the best possible positon, being constantly monitered as well as baby in the hospital. If anything starts to go wrong, they are right there to fix the situation. Hang in there and let us know how things are going. My thoughts are with you all. Best wishes...Mada

Mada's right! You're in the best possible place. I would think they should keep her there since she has been diagnosed with pre-e and it's such a fast moving disease. I delivered my son after being on hospital bedrest for 40 days at 33 weeks. He spent 2 1/2 weeks in the NICU and did amazingly well. He's an EXTREMELY active 14 month old now. Thank you for the fast response I keep trying to tell myself all is good. The baby is is estimated to weigh 5 pounds and was seen practicing breathing at our last ultrasound but I read all these horror stories about how fast this comes on and it scares the * out of me. Believe me my wife would love to be home on bedrest but she is scared and wants to stay there. I just cant beilieve they even talk about going home.

I completely echo Mada & Wendy.....your wife and baby are in the best possible place. I am shocked that they are even thinking about sending her home-and should she reach the point where they are going to release her, I would make it clear to her Dr.'s that you both prefer she stay put. She needs to be watched. At 34 wks-she's doing great....have they talked about doing the steroid shot to mature the babies lungs? Hang in there......

Dr met with her this morning and states she has stabilized. Her bp is 140 over 90 which is 20 points higher then she was all along. He said he is going to consult the specialist and make a decision tomorrow. A decision on what I don't know. But my wife gets the feeling its to keep her or send her home. This is driving me crazy. I just don't get it.

I agree wit Melissa that oyu should express your concerns and tell them you would be more comfortable were you are...in the hospital. SHe is probably doing better because she is doing nothing! Bedrest helps for a little but that will also begin to stop working. How are her labs and protien? They may feel that if everything is looking okay for now, she could rest at home as well. Who knows....You are getting the right attention, just ask tons of questions. That's what the doc is there for. Goodluck!!!

I have nothing special to add, except another success story. I went to a Dr.'s appt on a Tuesday was sent to the hospital and delivered by emergency c-section that Sunday at exactly 33 weeks. My BP's were up and down the whole week in the hospital, much like your wife. What the success part you ask? Our beautiful 9 month old who is healthy, active and happy, weighing 18 lbs. Your baby already has a week on him! It will be OK. I agree with the other ladies to stay in the Hosp. if you can. Your wife will be climbing the walls, but that is the safest place to be right now. Believe me she wants to stay in the hospital, as boring as it is but she knows its for the better. Her protein is +3 as it has been all along. If they send her home she will have to go to the hospital 3 times a week for labs and ultrasound. How can you get bed rest on doing that. I don't get it. She is an Nurse and this was her biggest fear that she would get this condition and it happened. Glad to hear success stories like your sons, it really makes me feel so much more comfortable.

I agree with those that have already gave you the premo advise. My wife was in the hospital for a month. She delivered at 30 weeks. I tip my hat to your wife for holding on for so long. She is in the best spot possible. Stay with her, be there for her, let her know that you are her strength. Ask plenty of questions, keep up with her labs, bp, and if in doubt, you have found one of the best resources I can think of. The ladies her have been there and done that. They each have their own experience, so I know that you will find answers and guidance to any question you may have. Keep us abreast of the wife and baby! Our prayers are with your family!
