Swelling Post partum

Hello:

Just last week I had preeclampsia. My daughter was born at 30 weeks. She is now 2lbs 10oz and breathing on her own. I was discharged from the hospital still with my pressure high but not high enough to put be on blood pressure medicine. I still experience swelling in my feet. Is this common after the preeclampsia? I am not on any medication, but I am watching my salt intake and diet. Does this mean that any other problems might have occurred after the preeclampsia like congested heart failure or liver/kidney failure?

An increase in swelling postpartum after preeclampsia is very common. It will frequently resolve on its own. However, you are correct to be concerned about the potential for other complications postpartum, (an increase in hypertension, heart failure). While these are rare, they are very serious. A week of treatment with a diuretic such as lasix may help and is not associated with risk.

If you swelling is worsening, if you have significant headaches, or if you are short of breath you should see your doctor. I will see most of my patients with severe preeclampsia within a week of delivery.
