Three important factors said to contribute to spontaneous preterm birth.
MedPage Today (2/11, Fiore) reported, "The worldwide preterm birth rate has been rising consistently for two decades, jumping to 12.8% of all live births in 2006 -- a 20% increase from 1990," explained Louis J. Muglia, MD, PhD, of Vanderbilt University, and Michael Katz, MD, of the March of Dimes Foundation. In a paper appearing in the New England Journal of Medicine, they "highlighted three important factors contributing to spontaneous preterm birth that deserve future research: social stress and race, infection and inflammation, and genetics."

There is not an abstract but here is the first part of the journal article:
